Topic: RE: Who are you telling about the surgery?
I haven't really worried about my kids telling other people. I did tell my older daughter to maybe wait and not say anything to certain people right now. I don't know if she really gets why but she is respectful and has told a couple of her friends in confidence. I'm ok with that since I know it is helpful for them to talk with peers about it. I don't even think my youngest (7) even understand what I am doing exactly. She gets I'm having a surgery and will be gone a night or two in the hospital. I have told her I will be eating a lot different and it will help me lose weight so i can be healthier and have more energy to do things. She sees that I am tired a lot so she likes that idea. I'm to the point now that I don't care who ends up finding out. I'm not going to be offering it up to anyone else, but if they hear through the grape vine I won't be denying anything. I do have 2 long time great friends that live across the country that I can't decide if I should tell them now or surprise them later. They won't see me again until I have likely lost a bunch of weight. I'm sitting on the fence with that one still.

My kids are 16,15 11 and 8. I told my 2 oldest a while ago. I was having lots of appts and they were curious. They were hard to read at first but they are getting used to the idea. My 11 year old was super excited from the beginning. But my 8 year old is the most sensitive and I was worried about telling her. I just talked to her about all the good things that will come from it and not to focus on the bad things that could happen. She is doing much better and I feel better about telling her this early. I just don't want them telling anyone til after surgey. We live in a very small town and everyone knows everything.

I have told my friends and family, I think my children are a little too young to understand but they know mommy has a bad hip and a bad back and she goes to a lot of doctors to get healthy. If they start to ask questions about my weight I will continue to tell them that mommy is getting healthy and encourage them to eat well with me. Shouldn't be a problem since they already do. Funny how I make sure my family eats healthy but never took care of myself. Needless to say, hopefully this will be a positie experience for all of us.

When they get older and can understand I will gladly tell them. As for acqaintences and coworkers I will share if they ask. I am a teacher so I will not be back at wor****il September but I have nothing to be ashamed of. I think I would feel worse if I lied to them, or hid the fact that I did not do this on my own.
My actual goal is to be happy & healthy....doesn't matter what number that lands on.

My date is July 31st but I figured I will have more in common with those of you that are having surgery a few days after me rather than those who had theres a full month before me.

I still don't actually have the insurance approval, we should know within a day or two but I have jumped through hoops and done EVERYTHING that they have asked, and then some. So fingers croosed!

I was originally scheduled for surgery in Feb but the insurance denied me, now my new date is 3 months before my wedding... not looking forward to that and certainly will not be happy if they pu**** back any closer :(

Good luck everyone!!

I'm so glad you started this group!

My date is August 2nd, so I'm right there with the rest of you.

I go to my nut class tomorrow, and then start my pre-op diet Thursday. I also have the low carb, lots of protein diet. I am so happy to not have to do all liquids! Although I'd be doing it if they wanted it!

At first I was just going to tell a small handful of friends and family, on a need to know basis.

For work, I was just going to tell my supervisor the thing about "I'm having surgery for health reasons, and I'll need to be out  X weeks."

But then I thought about my friends at work who DO know, and how awkward it would be if other people start asking them questions. So I ended up saying to the whole group the "for health reasons" thing, but that I didn't want to bore everyone with old lady health discussions. :-) Then I said if anyone wants to know more info, please come and see me, and I'll be happy to share whatever you want to know at any time.

Ha! no takers yet, but I bet post-op weight loss will get conversations started!
