I knowing that vomiting is a common side effect with wls and why it is, but knowing this hasn't help me much to deal with the anxiety that I feel whenever I think of how it will be post-op. (Some background) When I was 11 or 12 yrs old.  I had a severe case of food poisoning I mean really bad  I wouldn't eat beef for a very long time after the incident.
I was traumatized by it I have thrown up only once since then. If I feel like I'm going to puke I start to panic and have anxiety attacks.  So I was wondering How do you deal with it?  any advice and/or tips would be greatly appreciated.
My surgery date is Aug14th

I think you just have to take it really easy.

My doctor said not many of his patients throw up cause they are coached how to eat.

I think it's a matter of following your eating plan to the book and not pushing your 'new' stomach.

Some tips I heard against throwing up are:

- Take small, frequent sips of water. (instead of big mouthfuls)
- Chew your food (when you get to that stage) really well so it's almost a liquid form in your mouth before you swallow. (we mostly tend to take a big bite, chew a couple of times and swallow, so it's a matter of retraining yourself in how to eat.)
- Don't mix food and drink. For quite some time, you will just be able to eat with no drink. Then drink with no food.

That's what I've taken away from talking to people and research.

Hope you don't have a bad experience, just do your best to stay positive and communicate your anxiety about this to the doctor and nurses, they will do your best to help you avoid this.

Goodluck!

p.s. VSG is the best surgery to get in terms of not throwing up - it'd be a different story if you were getting a GBP or LB :)

Oh, you poor thing.  I also HATE to vomit.  I cry when I puke.  That should be really cute if I overdo it in a social setting or at work...
I think Sierra's advice was spot on.  Follow your plan to the letter and don't push any of the food phases.  Good luck.

I saw on one of the boards a suggestion to eat with a baby spoon. This forces you to take smaller bites and eat much more slowly. I have had a similar food poisoning experience as you, and will do ANYTHING to keep from throwing up. Don't worry about immediately post-op, your doc will make sure that you have nausea medicine on board. A lot of docs use a scopalamine patch, which lasts for 3 days. There are also melt-in-your mouth meds (like zofran) that you don't have to swallow.

Thank you for your comment.  I'm definitely going to buy baby spoons and a food scale.  I want to be as thorough as possible.  Food poisoning especially severe cases are not something you forget.

I went to the pre-op class and they do put a patch behind your ear right before surgery and also have other nausea meds waiting in recovery if needed.
I also talked  to them about a prescription for home.  So hopefully it won't be a problem.

Once again thank you for the info and good luck to you also.
