I  am two days out from surgery.  I have had to take MOM twice now.  I am also sure that I don't want to go into surgery constipated.  I do miss the fiber, I was using dried plums as I live in plum country california.

One stool softener did the trick - worked like magic!  I have a friend who used the same DR that I'm using and she ended up very constipated during the pre-op diet.  But, unlike me, she just took the nutritionist's word that every 2-3 days was fine and not to worry.  Well, she was still backed up when she came home after surgery and on the 4th day, had an EXTREMELY hard time having her BM - then she ended up in the hospital w/a leak just a few days later.  I can't say for sure that it was b/c of the pressure that was needed to complete the BM, but I'm not taking any chances.  I'm taking the blowout stuff the day before just to be sure!  I see from this forum that several bloggers are required by their DR to do that the day before, so I feel like I should be ok doing so.  I'm reluctant to use the Benefiber (chewables that I have) b/c each one is so high in carbs.

Funny story - on Tuesday afternoon, my surgeon's office called to offer me the spot someone cancelled out of the next morning - aka, this past Wednesday, a week before my scheduled date. I went into major freakout... "OMG no I can't I'm not ready" - I mean, mentally I am, but there is a ridiculous amount of stuff I have left to do at work so I can't. The lady kinda laughed at me, and said no problem. I was glad they offered, but...it threw me for a loop. Makes me wonder what I'm going to be like this coming Tuesday night.

As for dreams....I'm not dreaming of food at all. I'm having weird dreams about my cats in the hospital room.

Dreamt last night that the surgeon's office called and said - today's they day, we've moved your surgery up from Dec. 22 to TODAY!

Too bad it was just a dream.

Topic: RE: Question?
It's no secret at my job. I didn't openly share with every one until about 2 weeks before surgery. I figured every one will know once I return anyway. I've only shared it with those I see or talk to and am very casual about it like sorry I can't attend the party I will be recuperating from surgery. Surprisingly, every one has been supportive. From speaking with others who have had it, I'm told to expect some of that support to decrease once I really start losing weight.

I'm very happy about my decision and in the end, that's all that matters.

Hi! The fiber is definitely to aid the BM's. I have hemerroinds and a fissure that sting, burn and bleed like the dickens if I do not have 'regular' daily movements. I meet with the nurse tomorrow and will mention it to her as well - see if she has any suggestions for me. Hope you are moving along better soon too! ;-P

I had a dream last night that I was running my fingers over my incisions (I'm still 8 days out!).  I haven't really stressed about eating too much on the pre-op b/c I simply won't allow myself to do so - PERIOD.THE.END!  I've been waiting on this too long!  But, in all honesty, I'm sure it has to do with the tremendous amount of time that you are spending each day totally consumed by your thoughts on this subjet.  Perfectly normal!

I agree with shwag5150 - the 6 months that I had to wait (for nutrition counseling) has been used to educate myself to the hilt regarding this procedure, the impact on my health, etc.  My sureon's group and their affiliated hospital are a Baraitric Center of Excellence, so I trust them whole-heartedly with my care.

My insurance was also approved quickly - AFTER I completed the 6 months of nutrition counseling, a psych eval and a 4 hours nutrition class.

Did you receive ANY kind of nutrition guidence for post surgery?
