yoga can be used to stimulate the glands, organs, muscles, and nerves, and this is in ways that other forms of exercise cannot; as well, muscle tightness and strain can be quickly relieved or even rid of entirely with yoga, and both circulation and digestion can be improved as well. Even many stress-related symptoms, such as fatigue, poor sleeping habits, muscle spasms, anxiety, and indigestion can be improved, and this is only the beginning of the types of benefits and advantages that yoga can provide.

A new study of breast cancer survivors practicing Iyengar yoga. A form of yoga that incorporates all of the components of physical fitness and focuses on structural alignment of the body as well as mental relaxation – has found that breast cancer survivors who practice yoga have changes in the way their immune cells respond to activation signals, which may be important for understanding how physical activity and meditative practices benefit the immune system.

Pregnancy is a physical as well as mental experience. Women often becomes hyper aware of all the changes their bodies are going through. Yoga allows pregnant women to adapt to these changes more gracefully and to feel proud and a sense of appreciation for their bodies. Yoga exercises can increase flexibility, strength, circulation and balance. Many pregnant women find that regular yoga exercises help to reduce swelling, back and leg pain, and insomnia.

Iyengar yoga, one of the world's most widely-practiced methods, emphasizes correct alignment of all parts of the body within each yoga posture. This precision builds strength and stamina--balance and flexibility--and a new sense of well-being.

Topic: RE: Yoga post-op
Hi Stefanie, I know this is coming to you months after your post, but it looked like no one answered you and I thought I might try to help. I bought a book that was yoga for pregnancy. My belly gets in the way a lot when I try to stretch so I thought it might help!! I think they work to try not to stretch the ab muscles too much because it is safer that way. I think it should be okay for you to try these. You know when your body tells you something isn't right, so just listen for it to talk to you and do what you can. I am still pre-op but have done a little yoga and I really enjoy it!! I am looking forward to a time when I can get in there and really be able to get properly into the poses. I hope this helps. If nothing else, you can always use it when you get pregnant!! Bren

I'd like to be able to do some yoga stretches and poses post-op but I realize I won't be able to do much.. Would a yoga for pregnancy DVD, with moderate to low use, work??

Topic: How long did you wait?
I was wondering how long you waited after surgery to start doing yoga again. I was out of pratice for a long time before surgery because the positions became very hard to do. I'm really wanting to do yoga again but I'm just at the 7 week mark and I'm not really sure if I'm healed enough to do it. Many of the moves require so much ab strenght that I'm just scared to do it.

Yea!! What a fun forum. oops better be careful about using Birkam to describe a day, or we might get sued!) That made me laugh...thank you. I practice Hatha yoga. Although the poses are the same or very similar, I don't care for Bikrams yoga, it's too choppy. I want to flow from one to the next, his does not offer that for me. I started using The Flow Series on tape right after WLS. I enjoyed it but never got serious about it until I started taking classes. From there it just took off. I go twice per week for an hour and a half and practice at home two to three times per week. (without a video) After the kids are in bed, I pop in a CD, get out the mat and enter my own little world. It's great.
