Hi Soccermom,

I'd start by asking my doctor(s) what they think about weight loss surgery in general and for you in particular.  If you don't see a doctor regularly, ask friends and family about a good family doctor and make an appointment for a checkup.

Good luck in your journey,

Jan

Thanks for the advice.  I am planning to do it still if I get approved. I know it will only be a tool but I plan to use it to help me get some of the weight off and when I am in better physical shape I will work toward my goal.  At this point I am in so much pain secondary to the weight that it makes it difficult for me to move much.  Still scared though lol-

Hi Jung.
I am about 20 months out of surgery. I have went from 408 to 226 at the present time. I was down to 210 but have gained over the holidays. Yes I would do it over again and it has very much improved my quality of life. But its not easy. i have stuggled both physicaly and mentally and continue to struggle. I am at the point now were I can eat as much as I want if I eat the wrong things. I can eat as many chips and crackers and things like that. I am suppose to eat a serving of meat and then I can eat what I want to, because after the meat I can't eat much else. I did not get hugery he first year or so after surgery but the hunger is back now as strong as ever. i still have the desire to go to the buffet and eat all i can, and as long as I don't eat any solid proteins I could. Its a mental stuggle that we will have to deal with the rest of our lifes. Dr. Shin will tell you that the surgery is only a tool, after a year or so out, if you don't use the tool as it was disigned it will not help you and you will gain the weight back. I wish you luck

HI BOBBIE,

REMEMBER TO MEASURE YOUR FOOD WITH THE LITTLE CUPS THE HOSPITAL GAVE US.  WE ARE SUPPOSE TO EAT ONLY TOTAL OF 2 OUNCES PER MEAL SO, PROTEIN FIRST, 1 OUNCE AND THEN 1/2 OUNCE OF VEGS AND 1/2 OUNCE OF FRUIT.  THAT SORTA MAKES A MEAL.

ALSO, REMEMBER TO HAVE A SMALL SNACK BETWEEN MEALS SUCH AS PROTEIN DRINK (4 OUNCES). OR WHATEVER IS ON THE PHASE 4 LIST.  TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS.

Topic: Am I doing this right
I sometimes worry if I am doing things right. Am I eating too much or eating the wrong things. I need to regain control of what I am doing. I have lost 47 lbs. since surgery and feel good but sometimes I catch myself eating what I think is too much. Some things have become easy to eat and I sometimes tend to eat a little extra at times. How can I take control of what I put in my mouth and not over do it. I don't want to go through all of this and end up not changing the habits that made me overweight in the first place. I get plenty to drink and get my protein everyday but worry that I am eating too much at times.

Dr. Rossi and the people who work in the office are great. If you have any questions or concerns they will take care of any of them for you. Congratulations-you have a very competent and caring team!

Thanks for replying.  I am still going to pursue the surgery and have an appt. in Jan.  Have no idea what my insurance will make me go through.  I'm hoping all of my comorbidities will play a role in making this easier for the insurance co. to approve me.  How are things going now that you've been a few weeks out?

Hi sweetie. I couldn't/can't do ANY protein drinks, and seriously, I think I tried them all.  I couldn't tolerate any of them. The smell and the taste, oh my gah! As soon as I lifted them to take a drink I started gagging.  So I def. feel your pain.

I'm doing ok now, only because I'm 7 months post op and can get in most of my protein by food alone.  But before.....I drank skim milk.  IF you can tolerate milk ok, it and cheese will give you tremendous amounts of protein in little portions. I strongly suggest this.

I did suffer with hair loss though as a result of my lack of protein, so I gotta warn you there.  It fell out in gobs! Who knew a person had so much hair in their head?  I did have thick hair already, now it's just normal.  I've noticed in the past week that it has stopped falling out too! So as they say, it did last the typical 3 or 4 months.  Dr. Shin recommended biotin, but honestly, I never did buy any, as he said the damage was already done anyways and that I would just have to see it through.

So if you can, drink lots of milk and eat lots of cheese!  *Hugs*
