Topic: Surgery Date: 3/23/2009
Well, I finally got my Date and I must say I am on the countdown to a whole new way of life. 28 more days. I am excited and also reluctant. Reluctant to believe it is actually going to happen. I have tried to get this done several years now and now I am down to 28 days.
It has been since 1981 which was the birth of my last child since I have seen numbers below 200 and I honestly cannot remember what life felt like to feel good not only about yourself but about your physical well being.
I know that this is going to be a life altering change but I am ready for the change. My mother is being supportive, my dad, brother, childen and my hubby. However, they are not heavy and they do not understand what emotions are going thru me right now, nor do they understand how it feels to feel "fat". I have always tried to hide the emotion of caring by displaying that I feel fine or that the extra weight does not bother me .... deep inside .... shameful. Shameful that I allowed myself to get to this position to where now I have to have surgical intervention b/c God knows I have tried everything to get the weight off. Nothing works. At least not for me.
Anyhow, I will have to post more later, Thanks to everyone who has had this before me and for the words of encouragement that you portray on this site. God Bless You.

Topic: RE: B-12 ....what happens if you don't take it?
Hi Lisa,
No need to worry hon I won't be judging you or treating you mean. I am glad you came here and posted your question.
First off let me congratulation you on the awesome weight loss. You are doing wonderful!!
I am sorry to hear that you have been dealing with anemia. One thing you must do is start taking your B-12 immediately and consistantly. Iron and B-12 are not the same thing. If you don't take B-12 supplements and your body is deprived of it it can be detrimental to your health. For example.. being deficient in B-12 will cause anemia however in serious cases deficiency can potentially cause severe and irreversible damage to the nervous system. Common early symptoms are tiredness or a decreased mental work capacity, decreased concentration and decreased memory, irritability and depression and sleep disturbances may occur.
So please please take your daily b-12 supplements. You should have your blood work done periodically to check if you are at level. My doctor gives me a prescription and I take my B-12 in the form of a shot 1 time a month and it is so much easier for. It also absorbs a lot better.
Now stop putting yourself down sweetie. You are not dumb just not well imformed and by asking questions you will learn. If there is anything I can do for you please do not hesitate to message me.
Best of luck on your journey and please take very good care of yourself.

Sometimes venting makes all the difference in the world. I was lucky and didn't have to deal with all of that. My surgeons office took care of everything. I hope everything gets better for you.

Topic: B-12 ....what happens if you don't take it?
Hello,
First off, I've been a member for awhile so I know how some will bash others, please don't do this to me, I'm very sensitive.
On a daily basis I take iron because I was anemic, but for the last month I haven't taken my B-12 pills because I started a new job and forget about them all the time. I was wondering what the effects will be, and is iron the same as B-12...yeah I'm pretty dumb about all this. My doctor is three hours away and I really don't want to travel that far if I do'nt have to. My surgery was aug 20th 2008 and I've lost 80 pounds, not much but better than nothing.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Jim - So sorry for the mixup. Makes you wonder *****ceived the lost fax! I complete my 3-month pre-op this week and have my appointment on Monday. I am in hopes that everything will then be forwarded to insurance for final approval. Thanks for the warning. You might go ahead and call your insurance company tomorrow to be sure they received it. Best of luck! - Pat

I met with my surgeon on 12/16/08. I followed that with a psych eval on 01/05/09 and a meeting with the nutritionist on 01/16/09. I called my contact person at the surgeon's last Tuesday to see how the process with the insurance company was going. I spoke with my contact there and she said she would call me back. Of course, I never heard from her.
I just got off the phone with the surgeon's office (I called her) and she informed me that my insurance company told her that she had faxed all my stuff to the wrong number and they never recieved it.
So, now I'm back to ground zero in my waiting game when I thought my documentation was sent in over a month ago.
I'm a little disheartened but I know that this kind of thing makes us stronger and it will make me more appreciative when I'm finally approved.
The lesson that I've learned and that I hope all of you that are waiting on approval will take from this....Keep in contact with your surgeon's office.
Thanks for letting me vent!

Hello Elaine,
You know what you are feeling right now is very normal. Everyone goes through that fear. I remember writing letters for all of my children incase something wrong happened. What you have to remember is that you are doing this for you. So you can become healthy and lose all the excess weight. Once you have the surgery and you have recovered you are going to be so happy that you went through it. Stay focus leave it up to the hands of God and your surgeon and know that everything will be alright.
You are going to be able to drink water just fine. At first everything will be swollen so you will have to sip sip sip but then later everything is going to be great and you will be able to drink all the water your little heart desires.
I have a friend here on OH that has had the lapband surgery and I am going to tell her to write to you. She will definitely give you lots of good advice and your fears will diminish.
Thank you for your kind words. I love to be of help it is my way of paying it forward.
Take care and let us know how everything goes after you have had your surgery.
((((hugs))))

I am scheduled to have the lap band done on 3/11/09 by Sam Rossi.
I am scared to death. I have just broke down and started crying for no reason. I feel overwhelmed. I wonder how I got to this place?
I have to be honest. My worst fear is I love to drink water. I drink it all the time and am scared I will get sick from it.
You are always so uplifting in all of your responses.
I am looking for folks who are going through this or have gone through it recently.
Thanks for being such a great "smile" to this site.
I am sure that your words have helped many, many folks.

Don't worry you can ask me anything anytime. I did the same when I was starting my journey. I was on the forum asking tons of questions all the time. That is how we learn and I love to pay it forward.
I had the Gastric Bypass RNY. The first month of surgery I lost 23 pounds. Now remember this is not the same for everyone. The weight loss depends on your doctor's surgery (how much he bypasses and how small your pouch is. Also the heavier you are I have noticed the more you lose (quicker) If you are a light weight like I was ( Iwas 249 on the day of my surgery) then the weight loss is a bit slower. I have lost a total of 105.5 pounds and I feel great.
I was in pain for about 4 weeks but I cir****tances were different. You vcan read my profile archived from March 2007. My friend had the same surgery as me and was back to work 2 weeks post op. Everyone is different.
For the day of your surgery. Take your favorite pillow with you so you can feel a little comfortable when you are in your room.
Chapstick for your very dry lips
A bath robe to cover your back when you are out walking the halls
Comfortable clothes to wear to go home. Usually the very same one you used when you went in to have surgery/. Drawstring or lose fitting elastic pants.
Buy a pill crusher to take pills after surgery.
sip sip sip and walk walk and walk after surgery.
Buy gas x for the gas pains, drink chamomile tea it helps you move the gas.
Buy some protein drinks to have at home, chicken broth,s/f pudding,s/f Jello, s/f popsicles,s/f fudgesicles,s/f flavored drinks that you can buy at walmart great value brand. 0 calories 0 sugars great flavors for example apple, sunrise orange, cherry, grape, ice rasberry a great variety and cheaper than crystal light and my opinion is that it tastes better than crysta light. Protein powder at walmart vanilla flavor brand Body Fortress an almost 2 pound jub for just 14 dollars. Taste better than the other expensive ones out there and has 23 grams of protein in one scoop. You can drink it with water but tastes better with milk.
Use small bowls when you begin to eat purees and always measure your food.
That's all I have for now.
Follow your doctors & nutritionist instructions to the letter.
Contact me anytime.
Best wishes!
