Hi, Laureen and Jana.  I am also on the boards daily and would like to keep up with what everyone here in WV is doing.  Laureen, I've been wondering about taking medications after lap band surgery.  Is that a problem or do we need to crush them?

Jana, I also love Dr. Shin and enjoy talking with the girls in his office.  They are so helpful.  I use the gym at his office 4 days/week.  (Weight-loss Center gym).

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the boards too.  I live in Berkely County, the Eastern Panhandle.  I just had my first consult with my surgeon last week but they are expecting that I will be banded in March or April.  I really lucked out apparently I have one of the easiest insurances to work with.  The woman at the surgeons office was thrilled when she saw my insurance card.  So everyone keep your fingers crossed for me.  Anyway I can't give much in the way of advice but I am more than willing to give extra support to anyone that needs it.  Feel free to let me know if I can help any of you as I am sure that I will be leaning on many of you in the months to come.

Welcome, Julie!  It sounds like you have it made - insurance wise.  Most of us have either a 3 or 6 month supervised period prior to surgery.  It will be good to hear from another WV voice!!

Hello Pat and everybody,

My name is Crystal, I live in Charleston. I had Realize Band surgery in Huntington. I love Dr Nease!

I am 3+ months out and doing fairly well. I have lost 35 lbs. I am currently fighting the stress and food demons and they are winning quite often. I know I could have lost more wt by being strict with food, but I did not do this to be misrable, so I eat what I want in small quantities. I need to put some limits on it now and it is hard. Tomarrow is a new day and I plan to start it off well.

Thanks for posting this, good luck. Crystal

Hi I'm Mary Kay and live in Bridgeport WV. I had realize band in Sept and my weightloss has slowed to a crawl, so I am focusing on exercising and the bigger picture. 61 pounds in 10 months, which about a third was pre-surgery.

Hi, Crystal and Mary Kay!  It looks like both of you are having success with the band.  I'm so looking forward to my band surgery which, I hope, will be in March.  Best of luck to you both!

I hope you don't mind a male stepping in amongst all you ladies. I had RNY surgery 12-14-2006, the day of surgery I weighed 330, down from a high of 375. I reached my goal weight with in the first year with my lowest weight being 156. I now have maintained 165, plus or minus a few  pounds for a year. This a.m. I weighed 168. I went from a size 50 jeans to size 32. XXL shirts to medium.

I had my surgery at KDMC in Ashland, Ky. Dr. Wheeler was my surgeon and I have nothing but good things to say about him and the Surgical Weight Loss team. My stay at King's Daughters Medical Center was great. They truly try to cater to your every need.

Hey, Pan Head, glad you jumped in!  It's so nice hearing from those in our own area.  It looks like you've had great success with the RNY.  Two years out and still maintaining.  That's wonderful!!  Can I ask - is there anything you wish you had known prior to having the surgery?  I will be having lap band surgery.  Thanks!

I can't think of any one thing that I wasn't told about. The one thing that comes to mind is that they operate on your sotmach not your head. At two years out I find myself still having to be aware of old demons. Grazing at night and eating out of boredom.

I was told that I needed to make permenant lifestyle changes and for the most part I have.

I think one of the most important things I did was to incorperate exercise into my lifestyle. I found that I like to run. My advice would be find something you enjoy and do it.

As far as eating I pretty much did what I was told for the first year. I tried to make it black or white. If something was on the list not to eat, I didn't eat it. I am not sure why but I have had almost no complications. The ones I have had have been self inflicted; eating to fast or not chewing food well enough. Really just learning my limits. Good or bad I have found that there is very little I can't eat, however there are lots of things that I choose not to eat.

Hey guys !!

Just wanted everyone to know that I had my surgery last Wednesday and I'm doing fine.I will tell you this though I thought I was going to die the first 2 days .The pain was a lot more than I had anticipated and they also repaired my hernia too.Dr. Shin was  so good to me and his bedside manner is great he is just as nice in the hospital as he is in his office and he really takes his time with you .I had my surgery at CAMC Memorial then they transferred me in a ambulance to the Women and Children's Hospital   for a day of boot camp and they were great there and I do mean great .
