I have found that going completley low carb.....it starts up your weight loss and also doing my protein shakes, or protein powder in my coffee in the morning....make sure you get your protein in before any other foods. avoid carbs..I know it is hard, but try......use a flavored protein powder, add s/f syrups in your shakes.....be inventive with your foods.....check out the recipes here and see all the good stuff  you can have and it is legal.........

Topic: RE: Explaining your surgery to your kids...
My 10 year old didn't want me to get surgery either. She doesn't like change too much. She said I was perfect the way I am. At the same time, she talks about fat like it's poison so I have trouble believing she wasn't totally disgusted by my body.

Anyway, my teen told her "Mommy wants it and that should be good enough for you". I think I must have trained him well. Then I talked about the health benefits and how, if I had the surgery, I would live to see her grow up and have kids of her own. (Which is a large part of why I had the surgery.) That sold her.

She was obsessed with death for a while there though. I'm sure that, along with fear of change, fear of me dying was in there. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have been so honest that this can happen.

I did tell her that I've already had a surgery that is more dangerous than my VSG and didn't die and that helped.

Topic: RE: breast feeding after weight loss surgery
Well I had my surgery at 51, so no breastfeeding going on for me. But I think it's awesome you were able to do this.

To the poster who wants to wean .... my youngest wanted to bf forever. Of course, she doesn't remember that now. Heh. But at the time...

What I did was to start to lay the groundwork by bringing home books on weaning and talking about when she would no longer get nursies. Then, I started to limit her.

She was older, so talking worked, but with a 3 year old, probably distraction would work better. (Not that talking doesn't help too.)

Find something else to do when you sit down, such as read a book or play with a lap toy, and, if you are lucky, it will be something they want to do more than nursing. At age 3 it's about comfort and connecting with you more than the milk so just substitute other connecting and comforting activities.

And if you have one like mine who is very determined and very attached to nursing, at some point you may have to set a deadline. But that generally comes later.

Topic: RE: Xpost from Preggo Board: Hernia Repair during C-Section?
I don't have a hernia, but I have had two c-sections. The people who do them have no experience with repairing hernias. It's just your OB/Gyn and an assistant and they are totally focused on getting that baby out of there and you sewn back up as soon as possible. I'd be very surprised if they agreed to do this (or to call in someone who has the required expertise to do it).

But having a hernia repaired during a tummy tuck happens all the time from what I read here. It might even help in getting insurance to agree to pay for it or at least part of the costs.

Topic: Xpost from Preggo Board: Hernia Repair during C-Section?
I have a large lower hernia that developed after having my daughter, but the OB/GYN told me it was "nothing" (I don't go to her anymore).  I found out during my lap RNY that it was indeed a large hernia, but was too close to the bowels for them to feel comfortable repairing at the time.

I had thought of holding out and having a tummy tuck at the same time - around 18 mos post-op.  But now that I'm PG and that softball lump is protruding more, I'm wondering if it's possible to have it repaired during the c-section?

Anyone have any experience with pre delivery hernias and what did you/will you do?

Thanks!

My son was a little over 12 months old when I had my VSG. He is still breast feeding at two. I'm hoping I can wean him in January while I'm away getting my plastic surgery. I enjoy breast feeding, but he wants to nurse anytime I sit down. Any tips on weaning. I weaned my older child at 3 by getting pregnant. I think some women produce a lot more milk. Anytime I try to stop with the nursing I get so engorged and it is so painful.

I had my surgery Feb. 2005 and my first baby Nov. 5 2007. He is 7 months old now and I am the exact weight that I was before I got pregnant. I gained 40 pounds during pregnancy but it really came off easily - despite the fact that I did eat a lot of junk while pregnant. Shame on me! It was a bit nerve wracking watching the scale go up and up but you just have to remind yourself that it is for the baby and it is temporary. Best of luck to you! Bekki
