Topic: Which Surgery do Most Lightweights Choose?

I was wondering which surgery do most lightweights opt for. My BMI is 33 and I am approved for RNY but I would prefer a VSG due to the lower complications and the ability to take NSAIDs (I have had four failed back surgeries in the past), and also the lesser requirements for vitamins etc. I could not find any conclusive data on whether one is better than the other for people with BMI less than 35. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I understand.....I NEVER want to go back to being fat again!!! If I gain even a couple of pounds I sometimes go into panic mode even though I know I'm a long way from being heavy.

Even though your Profile picture is pretty small you look Great in your after picture!!! Just keep doing what you feel is the best thing for your body.

I never did any kind of exercising during my losing stage and that's probably why I have so much loose and saggy skin but I knew I wasn't going to do it the rest of my life and if I stopped I'd probably gain my weight back.

WARNING TO SELF AND TO ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN!!! AVOID 'BAD' CARBS AT ALL COSTS!!! THEY ARE ADDICTING!! THEY WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR WEIGHT LOSS DURING THE LOSING STAGE (and you won't even notice)!! THEY WILL MAKE THE SCALE GO UP AFTER THE HONEYMOON PERIOD IS OVER.

Success in Maintenance starts with GOOD CHOICES during the Honeymoon Period.

I feel I need to repeat this: I am a FIRM believer in Good Whey Protein Drinks!!!!! It is sooooo much harder to do Maintenance without them!

It's Monday already! DH and I had a nice relaxing weekend together. I've been thinking more and more about retirement but then I think "we'd probably kill each other if we were home every day together".....lol. I had a pretty good eating weekend.

We have them at my school, but I don't know if they offer scans or the price. I did hydrostatic weighing several months ago and was at 29% but it was also ran by students in my major so I'm not sure how accurate we were.

I'm not going to lie, I've been skimping on cardio but planned on adding it back in this week. I think I'm going to focus on trying to preserve the muscle I've gained and start to focus on more fat loss.

I'm in maintenance at a weight range of 115-118 (today @ 114.5). I had VSG. My calories range from 800-1500. IMHO you need to drop the calories to lose more. When I am at the high end of my acceptable range I keep my calories below 800 to drop back down. I don't exercise as much as you, but historically even when I was younger and exercised a lot it never helped me lose weight (or allowed me to eat more calories).

Are you somewhere, where you can get a DEXA scan done? I also work with a trainer and lift heavy. My trainer has my body fat currently as around 23% and my BMI is 23. Their calculators for body fat are classically inaccurate though, I feel like he has me lower than I actually am. I'm going to have a DEXA scan done so I know where my body fat vs muscle vs bone is and also a resting metabolic rate test to find out where I should be for maintenance calories.

Do you incorporate HIIT or cardio? Up until I hit 24% body fat I was doing my own cardio 3 days per week and doing HIIT intervals with my trainer in addition to lifting. Once I hit 24% we eliminated the cardio (I still hike/walk, etc on my own) and now I'm lifting at 10, 8, 6 reps but much heavier and my muscle definition is much better.

BMI puts me as overweight. Body fat is actually a better indicator of your health because it takes in account of fat mass and lean body mass. That's why bodybuilders can be classified as overweight with BMI but actually have very little fat.

Thanks! Some days it's easier than others. I think due to being obese at one point I always let the scale bother me now.
