Regain... so upset with myself!

So, how is everyone doing with 'getting back on the wagon'? I was inspired by all of your comments, and I'm also trying to jump start my weight loss! I've regained 20 lbs - which is nearly half of what I lost to begin with (as a lightweight) I have been so disheartened since Dr. K told me I am a super-absorber, although I had already figured that out. I only take vitamins twice a week now because I had toxic levels on my annual labs last year. That was 6 months ago, and my levels are all perfect now. I absorb every speck of nutrient/fat/carb that goes in my mouth. No gas issues. Ever. No diarrhea. Always constipated...I'm sure not the typical DSer!

Anyway, I've looked into getting a revision of my sleeve, but just found out I'm positive for H-pylori. My GI doc started me on the antibiotic regimen for 2 weeks which is making me horribly sick. I know others who have had it, but don't know anyone that got sick from treatment. Since 80% of people have it and don't know it, I'm not sure if I should put myself through 2 weeks of nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Any thoughts??

Hey there! Getting back on track hasn't been easy but I am getting there day by day. I have to contend with a granddaughter and teenage daughter who love their sweets... then again, so does hubby. Thankfully hubby has given up on sweets for Lent so I've got a cheerleader of sorts in my corner right now. Interesting you bring up about being constipated. That's always been my issue but if I don't get enough fiber and drink my water. Maybe time to have a talk with my doc about it a bit more.

I don't have any thoughts on the H-pylori... sorry. I do wish you the best and sending you positive, healing vibes from Jacksonville!

I constantly think about weight regain. If you ladies can answer this question for me it would help. During your regain did you lose your restriction to eat? If so, do you think it was from over eating or did the restriction cease over time? I'm six months out and I want to plan for long term maintenance. Mahalo for your advice.

My restriction ceased over time. Honestly, for me it there were a couple of things that contributed. The first is medications I was on up until recently. 2 out of the 3 I take have the side effects of weight gain, increased appetite and slowing metabolism. I found this out from my PCP. The prescribing doc agreed to me coming off those meds for those reasons and also because I feel (and am showing) I can manage my symptoms without them now. I am a few years post-op now but the regain started about 2 years ago for me. My advice is to stick to a plan. As Roz says, stay away from the bad carbs. That was my downfall!

I am happy to say that I am down 6.6 pounds! Yes, possibly some water weight but right now I'll take the scale moving in the right direction as good news. :)

dannypaul,

Thank goodness my tool still works after 7 years!

I really didnt lose restriction, but can graze on refined carbs without too many issues.

Was not eating protein first, not drinking enough water, and have a great fondness for salty crunchy crackers, pretzels or popcorn.

So my best advice during the honeymoon phase is to not re introduce refined carbs back into your diet.

Kudos to you for coming here and asking for help! First step of getting back on track!

Practice kindness to yourself! Beating myself up made me want to eat more. Just had to take a deep breath and start journaling my food intake and get rid of refined carbs. Not a breakfast eater but always have a protein drink in the morning. Will also do another one when i want to eat between meals or have a piece of dense protein.

We are only human. I too have been battling regain. Never quite made it to goal, got to 131 then up to 164. Down to 135 since June. I has surgery in July 2010. This really is a journey!

Have I been perfect, no way, but having more on track days then off days. Learning to love myself right where I am.

Best advice,

protein first

journal your food intake

get rid of white flour and sugar

get more steps into your day

Grateful my tool still works
