Issues with keeping it private?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone post-op has chosen to keep this surgery private? and if they have had any issues with doing so?
I am still pre-op (waiting to meet the surgeon) and my husband and I both feel that keeping my decision to go forward with this surgery a private matter is what works best in our situation. Just wondering if others have done the same and what problems they have faced because of it. Also, tips on handle day-to-day situations without broadcasting this decision.
thanks

There's been quite a few posters over my 8+ years of posting that have kept it quiet except for immediately family. I told my DH (Darling Hubby) right away and told my DD's (Darling Daughters) during my 6 month prep.
I told my Mom/brother/sister the week of and my brother of course knew people who had it and failed. After I lost around 40 pounds other people actually thought I was sick and were concerned so I did share with a few of them.
Do whats best for you! It can be pretty upsetting hearing others opinions and horror stories of failed WLS.

My husband and I have decided to keep it to ourselves. We have a teen daughter and son, and we don't want to involve them in it. I really don't want the extended family to know - especially my inlaws - so we feel that we don't want our children to feel like they are having to keep a secret. Its better that they just don't know for now. I will most likely tell them when they are adults.
I just want to be prepared for questions that the nosy-news will have. I'm getting some great advice so far. This board is awesome!!!
p.s. Roz, you and I have a lot of the same stats. Same height, and very similar beginning weight - I would be over-the-moon if my 'after' weight is like yours too! Thanks for the inspiration

its not staff I'm worried about, its extended family - ESP the in-laws.
But really, we aren't telling anyone. I've made the decision, and my husband and I are both good with it. Just really curious how everyone has dealt with all the questions.

Thanks for the compliment but you have your youth so you are going to look soooo much better than me!!!!!
It might be hard to keep it from your teenagers. It's a lifetime commitment and can be hard at the beginning.

I am pre-op DS (surgery date March 9!) and I am keeping my surgery private for now. I've told my husband (obviously), mother, and four close friends. For me, it just isn't anyone's business. I am a naturally very private person, and I would not discuss any other type of personal surgery with the general public, and I for now I won't discuss this either.
I was watching Aubrey in Wonderland's vlog on YouTube today and she said that she had discussed this same thing with her doctor. She said that she didn't want to feel like she was lying to people, but she also wanted to keep private. Her doctor recommended saying, "Thank you. I've been working really hard on it." If they press harder, you could say, "I've been doing a variety of things, including focusing on my eating and getting more exercise." And then ask them a question that changes the subject. I thought that was great advice, and I plan on implementing it.
great advice, thanks!

I kept my surgery mostly private. I only told my, daughters and sisters while I was pre-op. I told my son the week before surgery and I told my nieces after surgery. I haven't told anyone outside family, and I've asked them to keep it to themselves.
I feel like, this is just as private as any other medical issue I might have. I wouldn't publicize anything else in my medical history, so this should remain private as well.
I'm not ashamed or embarrassed, I'm just a very private person.
If anyone asks why I am so suddenly thin, I say that I worked with my doctor to get to the healthiest weight possible and that I'm feeling better than I have in many years. Most people just drop it right there. If they ask for details, I ate a protein forward meal plan with limited carbs and calories. (All true)
