Losing Too Fast?
i just went for my 3 month checkup (will be 3 months on 6/28). I've apparently lost 89% of my excess weight and they say I am losing too fast (need to eat more). Strange position to be in. I started out needing to lose 85 pounds and lost 34 of them in the months prior to surgery during my insurance required supervised weight loss period. Have any other lightweights lost as fast as I have? I am going to add more calories, but want to be careful not to trip it the other way.

Well, no, I didn't lose too fast. Every time I checked the tracker on this site I was right where they expected me to be. Try posting on Miles and Menus and maybe we will have some suggestions. I didn't look at your type of surgery. Maybe you are malabsorbing more than expected. Did they check your labs. I would want to be sure I was still ok with those because that can get you into a lot of trouble. Really, you only had about 50 to lose and to do that in 3 months, at least with RNY isn't that unusual. I think that you lost so much before surgery has something to do with your total now.

Price is on point, you did lose a lot of weight pre-op.
You and I have similar goals, about 80lbs excess weight to lose. (my goal includes going 10-15lbs below ideal weight to account for bounce back after the honeymoon period.)
During pre-op I was cautioned not to lose too much weight, so during my 3 month supervised weight loss I only lost 9 pounds. BTW, that was all fat, and I gained a bit of muscle. My surgeon didn't want me falling out of the "morbid obesity" category and risk being denied. If I'd lost 34 pounds I would have had a BMI of 29.9 prior to surgery. No bueno.
BUT! Your monthly losses are very similar to mine. Month one I lost 17.5lbs, and week five I lost another 2.8lbs. If it continues to track, I will have lost another 12-ish pounds during month two. I think your monthly losses are very normal and I wouldn't worry one bit. But I'm a newbie, I'm sure the vets have smarter things to say than me. :)

Congrats on your Surgery!!!
When they say 89% of excess weight was that their goal for you or was that landing you at a normal BMI. Personally I would go as low as I could go before even thinking of slowing down my weight loss. BUT If you do decide to increase your calories do it with Protein NOT CARBS!! Having WLS doesn't take away the bad habits that made you gain weight in the first place. This is the time for learning new healthier eating habits.

I had VSG surgery and the 89% is based off of their goal which is higher than mine. They said that I might mess up my metabolism permanently if the weight loss doesn't slow down and to work on getting more calories through protein and good carbs (vegetables and fruits).

I don't know anything about VSG; however, I think you should look at the total lost over the 7 months. I suggest you add more calories from protein supplements or protein. After nearly 8 years, I have 1 or 2 protein shakes a day or a protein bar like Quest. You do need to watch some of the so-called healthy bars. Some of them are loaded with sugar and carbs.
Some stay away from fruit due to the natural sugar, but I eat 1 or 2 fruit selections a day. Berries are the best choice but I eat grapes, a banana occasionally, melon and apples. I like apples with a little peanut butter. I don't eat apples in the evening because the sugar in them keeps me awake.

I was just thinking about what you said about my pre-op weight loss. If you add those 4 months to the 3 post-op I am actually 7 months into weight loss (not 3) so I think that may be confusing the issue!

Unless you are depriving yourself by not getting in your required protein and minimum calories, you are not losing "too fast". And it will slow down..way down... so enjoy the quick loss while you can before you have to start working a lot harder for it :)
- High Weight before LapBand: 200 (2008)
- High Weight before RNY: 160 (2015)
- Lowest post-op weight: 110 (2016)
- Maintenance Weight: 120 (2017-2019)
- Battling Regain Weight: 135 (current)
Personally I do not think it is possible to "lose too fast" after bariatric surgery. How many calories a day are you eating now? As long as you are getting your protein in, I don't think there is a problem. People who add more calories sometimes have a hard time stopping and then cannot stop gaining. At 5'3", you can go a lot lower than your goal weight of 135. I am 5'7" and look healthy at 135-140.
