Does anyone here take probiotics?
I have slow digestion and I tend to have tummy distress when I don't eat right or change my diet in any way. I was thinking I would start taking a chewable acidophilus starting now, since I'm a little under 30 days to surgery. Hoping to build up my system to prepare for the onslaught of drugs my system is about to encounter.
Thoughts?

I take large dose probiotics now and wish I had started taking a probiotic pre-op. I have the duodenal switch which bypasses a lot of intestine and can result in some terrible gas. Probiotics are a great help.

I have taken them from time to time but never regularly. To be truthful, I'm not sure they will help much with the drugs they give you at surgery and after that, you should be coming off meds, not increasing them. I would be sure your surgeon or PCP does a full set of labs so you know if you are low on any vits/mins because after surgery it is harder to get your levels back up.
Also, stop drinking with meals (really hard for some folks), decarb and decaff and learn to take tiny bites the size of a pencil eraser and chew, chew, chew.
May you have a textbook surgery and a boring recovery.

Dont take them before surgery or they will interfere with your antibiotics . Afterwards they really help with healing and less scarring probably inside as well as outwardly . I rink nonfat orgaic kefir sometimes with live cultures .. it really helps the skin and digestion.
