Hello all....I am 51 yrs old, 5' 7" HW 267 CW 258.  I am meeting with my surgeon soon to set a date for the sleeve. I am very excited and have done everything necessary to get this surgery...and then I had my ultrasound of my stomach and the ultrasound tech said something that made me think. She told me she didn't think I looked big enough to have the surgery. What does that mean??  Lol. I have always been told that I'm statuesque and I "wear my weight well". But I can never remember weighing less that 225 pounds in my whole life. Have any of you faced judgement because you didn't look "big" enough for surgery?  Thanks

Welcome to the Lightweight board. We've all been judged like that, I think it comes with the territory. Stay strong, you know what you need to do to be healthy. I think people think they are paying you a compliment when they say we don't look big enough. Just smile and nod.

I, too, have heard that!  But my decision to have the sleeve was the "tool" that I need to get my co-morbidities under control by controlling my weight!  I don't think people are being rude, they just don't understand WLS.  Hang in there.  There was a reason you decided to go down this road.

I think we all heard it at least once.  Like Gina said, I don't think people say it to be mean but I usually answer, "it was a decision I made with my Dr".  If you passed everything, you qualify and yes, you would at 300lbs too but why wait.  Have a great meeting with your dr and get ready to enjoy a new life.

I had several people tell me that I didn't look big enough.  I met the 40 bmi criteria.  I have lost almost 80 pounds, and still have 3 rolls of back fat so at least another 20-30 pounds to go.  Even staff at the hospital told me I didn't look big enough.  I thought I had a lot of muschle, but now that everything is so saggy and I can see the muscles in my legs and arms, I am definately a wimp and there is/was a lot more fat than muscle :)

The morning of my surgery I was laying in the staging area when the anesthesiologist (im sure I spelled that wrong) walked up, he looked at my chart looked at me and looked at the chart again.  He asked me what I was having done.  I told him Gastric Bypass, he said I looked so tiny laying in that bed and I had to be the smallest gastric bypass patient he's ever had.  I was 199 the morning or surgery, started my journey at 220 but 1 year before. (5'2")  I've yo yo dieted all my life.  I was never able to keep it off, it all came back with more piled on top.  Don't let anyone deter you if this is what you want.  I'm almost 3 months out, and I'm very happy that I went forward with my plan.  I'm down 56.5 pounds down from my highest weight and starting to feel fantastic.
