Lactose Intolerance After Surgery - cross post
I've been reading that it is not uncommon to develop and intolerance to milk after surgery. I usually use milk in a protein shake. I never had a problem before but now milk doesn't seem to sit well at all. Queasy and bloated feeling. Greek yogurt & cheese don't seem to have the same effect. Have you had similar issues and how long did it last? Are you able to tolerate milk now? I don't mind switching to soy or Lactaid.
Carpe Diem!

I didn't have any issues but I know folks who can tolerate cheese and processed milk but not regular. Soy may cause gas. I have been loving all of the nut milks in my shakes at night. I buy plain, no sweetner or vanilla or anything and they are low calorie and low carb. During the day I use lemon tea or Caribbean cooler and water. I use water when making my "creamer" for my decaf. You may want to try one of the nut milks.

I haven't noticed any lactose issues, but ive pretty much eliminated it altogether, just because the unsweetened almond milk I use in my shakes is only 30 calories compared to the 180 calories in milk. You do lose a couple of grams of protein going this route, but I use a scoop & a half of chocolate protein in my morning coffee so I get 35 grams there. 1/2 my daily goal.
Good luck!
Our dietitian recommends using Lactaid milk the first few months until our guts heal and we get used to things. Also, a good probiotic might help. My issues didn't last long and was able to switch off Lactaid after a few months.

I had a milk intolerance after surgery. Honestly, I've been scared to try it again as it made me feel so bad. I will though as I'm sure that can leave as easily as it came on. I've been able to tolerate milk/dairy products like yogurt and cheese - it was just the milk I couldn't handle. I will give it a go in the coming weeks though just to see if things have changed.

I am 4.5 years out. Still lactose intolerant to regular pasteurized milk. Can eat cheese, yogurt, etc. I do NOT do Lactaid or any of the pretend milks...I want REAL MILK. Back in Jan of this year, I found Raw Milk (and yes, I read all the warnings on the CDC and FDA pages). I live 5 miles from a state that allows retail sales of Raw Milk from very regulated dairies.
Since Jan 2015, I have been able to drink an 8 oz glass of milk daily. NO issues but if I drink even ONE oz of pasteurized milk, I bloat and am miserable.
