Hormones after WLS and menopause/cross post
Hello,
This question is for the ladies who had WLS after going through menopause. Did you have the hormone surge I keep reading about after your surgery? If so, how long did it last and how bad was it? I had a stem cell transplant in 2003 and that put me into early menopause at age 35. I've had my hormone level checked with a blood work-up a few years ago and it showed a menopausal state. I used to have the worst PMS and I really am hoping not to enter that realm of craziness again. I'll be 48 when I have surgery.
I'm a evo-lacto vegetarian so I still get a dose of hormones through dairy and eggs. I don't buy organic.

Hi,I am 58 I went through menopause after a hysterectomy at 40. I did have hormone surges (also known as hormone dumping) and continue to experience them. I know what they are and I know it will eventually be behind me. I cry and am inpatient often. When I feel normal it feels wonderful and I embrace it. Our hormones are living in our fat cells so as we lose weight our hormones are not impressed. We pee them away…bring on the pee lol. I wish you a wonderful and successful journey. This to shall pass.
I was 62 at surgery and was way past menopause due to a hysterectomy years ago. My surgeon suggested everyone, male and female, go on antidepressants before surgery due to released hormones. I did, although I had never been on anything like that before but I do think it helped. I could tell I was having some hormone stuff but nothing like menopause. May want to discuss this with your Dr. I think I was only on them for maybe 6-9 months, during the rapid losing part.
Good luck with your surgery. Let us know how everything goes.

I've been menopausal for the past two years, I'm 52 soon to be 53. The hot flashes were pretty much under control, the emotional rollercoaster had even out and no more insomnia. I had surgery this past April and within the first 2 weeks I started spotting (I have fibroids) which lasted about 3 weeks, started feeling a little blue, and started having hot flashes again but no insomnia. I'm actually sleeping much better now. Now 8 weeks after surgery I can tell I feel blue less often, the spotting has stopped, but the hot flashes are still with me but nowhere near as severe as they were before surgery. I also live in California where it is expected to be 103*. I wouldn't consider myself depressed I say blue because I just feel a little off kilter. I think it was a combination of the rapid weight loss and trying to figure out the different food stages we go through after surgery. The liquid & pureed stages being the hardest. Now that I can eat normally and it's just a matter of seeing what I can tolerate I don't experience the melancholy it did before. Trying to figure out the new body and new habits isn't easy. If I hadn't read about the hormone dump here I'm not sure I would have been as prepared.
Carpe Diem!
