Hi Lily2,

Thank you for reaching out. I guess I picked the "bazooka" of all weight loss surgeries because I'm such a terrible snacker and grazer, and the DS was recommended for those of us that graze but like protein and don't mind taking a lot of vitamins. I used protein shakes as a primary source of nutrition for almost 6 years--meaning I'd make sure I got 120 grams of protein via shakes and anything else I just chalked up as extra. Keeping with protein shakes rather than trying to stuff protein into my sleeve, I think kept my sleeve small, thus keeping restriction at a maximum for much longer. I tried to keep carbs at a minimum (under 50 net) but I have to admit, I'm not doing as well with that these days. The other thing I did was walking--a lot. I'd walk 4 to 6 times a day for 10 minutes each time. I guess it kept my metabolism burning. I've seen plenty of lightweights with RNY stay pretty close to goal for a long time, but they stay low carb and stay hooked into a support network like this one. Please keep asking questions and good luck!

Thanks for the info Gina.  I wanted to and still want to stay on protein shakes as meal substitutes for awhile.  Ive gotten negative feedback on this from a few ppl and my nut, saying that i could become dependent on them and not know how to actually eat right.   In the end though I am going to do what will actually work for me?  If you dont mind my asking, How long did it take for your weight to come off?  And is there a huge difference in weight loss from a DS vs. RNY?

It took me 11 months to get to goal, which was right in the middle of the normal BMI range. It only took 5 or 6 months to reach the top of the normal BMI range, but the last months was slow going because there is so little left to lose.  Lightweight RNY and DS patients lose about the same in the same amount of time, it's the long term maintenance where you might see a difference. RNY provides less malabsorption than the DS.

I don't see a problem with depending on protein shakes--our Soldiers do them, weight lifters do them.  You are just as smart or smarter than they are, why would drinking protein supplements suddenly make you not know how to eat properly? ...Protein first followed by green leafy veggies. You won't have room for anything else if you keep your pouch small. As you said, do what works for you.

That is my plan.  So you used protein shakes for all your 3 meals?  Or did you use them for a few and eat protein for a main meal?  My plan is to keep it very easy.  I dont want to have to stress about food, ive done that most of my life and im seriously tired being obsessed with thinking about my next meal.  My hope is that this surgery eliminates the constant thoughts of this.

I used protein coffees throughout the morning and a shake at lunchtime. My low carb-high protein meal was at dinner.  Since I'm a grazer, I would graze on cheese and nuts at other times...not good but there you go.

What is protein coffee?  And i thought nuts and cheese for snacks would be considered good.  I see many eating baby bell cheese (sp) as a snack here.  Your info has help me so much, thanks for sharing and the support.  I start my pre- op in two days.  Its all getting scary close!
