Help with guidance and suggestion
on 5/13/15 11:47 am
my surgery (RNY) date is set for May 27 th and I am starting to stress about being prepared. Could anyone suggest or recommend the food/drink essentials I need to have stocked at home immediately post op? also i am not sure if vitamins need to be taken directly after surgery and what type do most buy here. Any help will be most appreciated!
It is so hard to say what to get pre op. I did order a lot of samples of protein powders (vitalady had a ton) and chewable vitamin samples from bariatric advantage and celebrate vitamins.
The problem I had was every thing tasted so different post op. I kept a list of what protein powder I could tolerate. Sometimes I would like one, then one day I just could not seem to drink it any more. I found that About Time protein powder agreed the best with me. Unjury also. I also used Isopure too at first.
Some companies have sample sizes you can buy. I also now see one serving size packets at the Vitamin Shoppe for Nectar and Jay Robb, and couple of others.
Sugar free jello and popsicles. Warm liquids went down very easy like decaf tea, broth and fell in love with a sugar free powdered apple cider from Alpine valley.
What does your program suggest?

Ive just today started seriously reading all the info the surgeon has given me. Post op for two weeks is liquid but wasnt sure what worked for most and what types of liquid went down easier than others. I would love to find somewhere where i could order samples of protein but have not been successful finding them.
Both Unjury and Syntax have samples you can order. Google them.

My Bariatric Pantry has samples, there website is http://www.mybariatricpantry.com/Bariatric_Protein_Samples_s/35.htm They have sample packs of the Syntrax Matrix and the Syntrax Nectar. You can taste all (or most) of their flavors. I have found the Syntrax products to be the best for me. They don't have that protein taste like the others and they are very high protein and low carb.
Remember, you may not like something now, or immediately post op, but your tastes will more than likely change throughout the process. :)
My program was very very specific about what we could and couldn't do post op. I did get samples from Unjury and Syntrax and those gave me a chance to try stuff without buying a whole tub. Even if you get stuff you like now, you likely will feel different once you have surgery. I have never been a big plain water person but I loved plain water post surgery. Room temp or warmer was best for me. Herbal teas were wonderful and Unjury chicken soup. Everything was too sweet and with those I could have something not sweet.
Your dr should give you a list of vits/mins needed. I started with generic centrum chewables from CVS and still use those. Calcium needs to be citrate. B12 needs to be sublingual. If your D is low, start now trying to get it up. It is much harder after surgery. And it needs to be a dry D3. You can go with special vits but you can also get by just fine with stuff from the drug store if you know what to look for.
Welcome aboard. Congrats on your date. Stay in touch. Looking forward to your journey.

Thank you so much for the info, i feel like im floundering here and im not sure why. Maybe the jitters are setting in. The only vitamins that were suggested to me were the Bariatric Advantage which has calcium but not sure if i need more. So many questions and I just feel like im not prepared!!
Which surgery are you having? did they do a complete set of labs so they know where you are now? If you are having a sleeve, you won't malabsorb so it is not quite so critical except in the beginning when you are so limited in what you can eat. But if you are having RNY or DS, you need 2 full multis, calcium citrate, B12, probably D3, maybe iron. Vitalady, who I think isn't in business anymore, had a great lineup of what each surgery needed. The other place to get a full list might be on the surgery board on this site. I'd just ask what everyone Dr is suggesting. I just know we were told very specifically what we needed then it was adjusted by individual labs.
Keep up the questions. We are here to help.
