total melt down
I don't think it is the fact of being hungry, just that we want to eat feeling. I take it your are on a liquid diet. I was on clear liquids the first week post-op, then went to pureed for 3 weeks. I have now went to soft. Are you allowed sugar free popcycles? Sugar free Jello? If so, that might help that want to eat feeling?
So are you post op or preop? Every dr seems to have their own way to do the "preop" diet so it is hard to tell.
I really believe in folks following the rules with all this, esp after surgery. Then it is really, really critical. But before, I think you don't have to stay all liguid for 2 weeks. My dr was about as restrictive as they got and we were on a 4 week, optifast and one food meal diet before surgery. Only the last day was all clear liquids and that is really important because they need your gut to be totally empty when they go in there. Even on our optifast, we could have unlimited celery and cukes, which were a lifesaver at times when I really wanted (not needed) something to eat.
You can do this. It is hard but one way or the other, you can do this. If you are post op, or even pre op, this is such a short time in the grand scheme of things. Take it one day at a time, you can do this.

I didn't have little kids, just DH and me at home these days. I just didn't cook. I figured he could make whatever he wanted to eat, he is a grownup!!! I went for a walk or worked in the garden or something so I didn't have to be around it.
After will be so much easier because, truly, for months, I could have cared less if I ate or not. I was psyched up for each phase change but I wasn't hungry for months and had to schedule eating. Yeah, everything smelled good but I was totally uninterested in it. Unfortunately, it didn't last, lol.

Even if all i'm doing is a shake, I sit with my boys (DH & DS)at dinner, although I gotta admit it has got to be easier after the fact w/o the cravings for the food & the actual hunger. Just remember this too shall pass and youll love love love it after the fact.
Good luck as you continue on your journey!
