Help with head games

I was advised to come here from the RNY forum to reach out to any who could give me some advice. Seems like a silly question to ask but it's a question I struggle with as my journey get closer to reality for me. I'm on the low weight side for RNY with 75-80 lbs to lose for my optimal weight. I am 5'2" and weigh 195. Most that find out I am planning to have RNY think I'm crazy to go thru such an intrusive surgery for this amount of weight. I should add I am a new diabetic which prompted this decision I've made. Question is, are there Folks here who have made this decision with a smaller amount of weight to lose and do they have any regrets? Also how do they deal with the ney sayers? Example: 2 days ago saw a dietician for the diabetes (bariatric trained) who told me I was crazy to have this done! She even made me get on the scale to prove I weighed what I said I did. Any insight would be most appreciated.
Most of the people on this forum started out with similar statistics to yours. You have to ask your self, have you tried to lose weight the old fashioned way and been unsuccessful, or successful but not managed to keep it off. Are you continually fighting a battle you feel like you can't win? Do you have health issues (as you've said you do) caused by weight? Do other people in your family have weight issues (genetics)... Are you continually gaining each year?
If any or all of these apply then you may be justified in pursuing the WLS. Insurance may disagree though, youll have to figure that out. I can say most who we hear having had the surgery on this site love it!
Ultimately for me regarding the naysayers, (If you feel you have to answer them) I just respond with the same answers to the questions above, basically I did it to make my health better, and it is sooo much better already for me!
Good luck whatever you decide!

Thank you for responding and yes to almost all those questions. I have lost 100 lbs years ago but regained it all back and now that I'm older it just is harder. I can lose weight but I cannot keep it off. I do believe I fit into the insurance requirements of a lower BMI (35 or above) with a co morbidity. Fingers crossed anyways.
I am considered a lightweight although I had a little more to lose than you do. I'm your height. Even after nearly 7 years, I'm not comfortable posting my weight statistics. I have absolutely no regrets. I was a member of Weigh****chers' off and on, mostly on, for 35 years. I was never successful in getting to goal.
Since RNY in 2008 I have gotten to a size I like, off several meds and very happy I had it done. I have regained a few lbs. just because I got careless with eating but I'm working to take off those lbs.
Don't listen to naysayers. Only you and your doctor can decide what is best for you.

I used to carry my weight "well" too - until I hit the 200's.
You're NOT crazy! I was 5'2" when I started (gained an inch after!) and was 208 at surgery. I got to 123 and have had some bounce back. I lost a total of 95 pounds.
I'm glad someone sent you over to us - most of us have had the same experiences you have.
Definitely are head games at this point (and after) of the surgery. You'll get folks saying "you're not big enough" etc. Do what's right for YOU!
I'll tell you - you won't regret it!

Everyone has said pretty much what there is needed to say. I just want to add that you have to do what you feel is best for you, regardless of what others say. Losing weight is hard and if someone has never struggled with losing a lot of weight then they have no idea. I weighed 212 at the time of surgery. I am only 5'1. My highest weight ever is 232. A couple of years ago from that starting weight I lost a little over 70 pounds. Life happened and I ended up gaining back almost every single pound!
I had people tell me, you lost it before can't you just do that again?! None of those people understood just how difficult it is to be overweight and in my case short too. I just told them that the fact that I lost and regained and have been struggling with my weight for the past 7 years makes me a great candidate for surgery. Plus I also had high bp and cholesterol. I also have PCOS and hypothyroidism.
I am only a month out but I do NOT regret this surgery at all. I had VSG though so I know that is different but regardless, I do not regret getting the surgery at all. 75-80 pounds is still a lot of extra weight, esp on your 5'2 frame!
Good luck with whatever decision you decide to make. Either way we will be here to support you!!
