I think I was told "never"... but never is a long time - lol.  I DO drink and shouldn't as they are empty calories and that's where my weight gain came from.

Yes you could dump on the sugars in the drinks - especially if you started drinking too early after surgery.  I had my surgery in Oct of 2008, NYE I had 1 glass of wine.  Then I didn't have another drin****il my 6 month anniversary, which also happened to be my 50th birthday.  After that it was several more months after.  I took a shot of whisky, mixed it with SF lemonade crystal light.  I got some very strange looks at the restaurant - but oh well.  I also didn't do anything with carbonation either (hurt!).

To this day i swear I am legally intoxicated with just 1 drink (and probably am).  Alcohol is processed in our stomach by our gastic juices which breaks it down.  Having RNY our gastric juices are no longer in our stomach but in our lower part of the intestine.  So - alcohol is absorbed directly into the system through the stomach at full strength.  What digestion does happen in our pouches is from our saliva - so it isn't much.  That's why you have to chew your food so thoroughly - so it moves through your system easily.

I just had my appointment with the psychologist today, and he told me that due to the surgery, and my stomach not being able to break down alcohol, that there is a chance of becoming an alcoholic due to much higher concentrations of alcohol going directly into your system. That to me pretty much says, say good bye to alcohol.
