Weight Training and Calories as a Lightweight

Hi everyone :)

I'm 6 weeks out and cleared for exercise, and I'm planning to start weight training in the next few weeks.

I typically take in from 500-800 calories a day, about 60g of protein, and under 50g carbs. My concerns are- will weight lifting cause me to stall my weight loss? Will I need to increase my calories per day? I am comfortable with the way I eat now and I wouldn't like to increase it if I don't have to.

I'm 27 years old, 5'1", and 192lbs.

I wouldn't increase your calories because of your weight lifting.  I would just stick to the program and it will continue to drop.  You may stall, but it may or may not be because of the weight lifting.  I stall for 3 weeks, lose for 1 week, then stall for 3 weeks... I've been doing this almost the entire ride. :/

I would just see what works for you.  You may stop losing lbs for a while, but still be losing inches so make sure you're taking your measurements. :) Muscle weighs more than fat.  Make sure you're getting at least 64 oz of water. :)

You need more protein if you are weightlifting.  I do muscle pump 2x a week and have for about 2 yrs.  I keep my protein over 100g and usually my carbs under 30 when I am losing.  While you are in your rapid losing phase, you are losing muscle as well as fat and weight lifting will help you keep muscle but you have to have protein to build muscle.

Good point about building the muscle Price. I think the only way to get my protein up that high is to incorporate protein shakes; which I haven't been able to tolerate post-op without gas and stomach problems (both whey and vegan varieties).

I'm going to see if a pre-made shake makes any difference... I want to increase my protein but without eating more I think shakes are the best bet.

Personally, I hate the taste of the ready to drink stuff that I have tried but others are ok with it so give it a try but don't buy many.  Maybe order some samples from Syntrax or Vitalady.  I couldn't get my protein up without them but I love them so it is no hardship.
