Angry and Frustrated!!! AND PROBABLY HORMONAL! GRRR!
This is VERY common. Your taste buds change drastically after surgery - unfortunately you just have to keep trying until you find something you like - but THIS WILL PASS! Yes, your taste buds WILL return to normal.
I couldn't handle anything with fruity taste (protein, yogurt etc) as it was just too much. I had to stay very bland to be able to tolerate tastes. Unflavored protein - yes, you still can "taste" it but if you can mask it with SF syrups, crystal light, etc that is better. The texture is still there though so if you can't get past it being a bit "thick" that can be an issue too (in the form of a drink). Now - I HATED scrambled eggs prior to surgery and now LOVE them. I just made sure they were nice and creamy with cheese. I mix my eggs with full fat cream or sometimes butter. Don't overcook or they get rubbery. If you had RNY you may need to be careful with fats. I dumped on them for a couple of years.
Not sure where you're at with your diet but refried beans with cheese/sour cream on them was my friend for quite awhile. Just be sure you chew to smitherines when eating it.
Hormones are stored in fat. When you start losing fat quickly the hormones are released into your system quickly. This too will pass but unfortuntely it may stick around for awhile (a month - 2???).
Hugs to you - and hang in there - it DOES get better!!

Thanks Jodi for your suggestions. I will be out this morning on the hunt for some samples of things to try. Cream of mushroom soup seems to consistently taste good to me. I am looking forward to scrambled eggs but am less than 2 weeks post-op. One thing I seem to have noticed in reading a lot of these posts is that there are quite a few that mention having to go to their doctor to be approved to advance to the next stage of their diet. No one mentioned anything to me about any further doctor appts aside from a 6 month follow up with my surgeon in Toronto. (he said of course to call if any issues) I have a post-op group meeting at my Bariatric clinic at the end of the month which will be about one month out for me. All anyone has ever said is listen to your body. Try a little and go from there. I did eat some cucumber yesterday sliced very thin and chewed very well. No problems.
I also didn't have "stages". I was just told soft foods and to chew thoroughly. I ate eggs from about 4 days post-op... and yes, listen to your body. If you introduce new foods, try to do them separately so if you have a reaction you know which food caused it.
Now I DO remember no fruits with skin (like grapes, apples, etc) because the skins can cause problems early out...
Glad the cucumber worked for you!

Darn, OH ate my post from last night. So here goes again.
I really really remember feeling the way you do with everything being too sweet, too strong. I also remember being so very ready for each and every diet phase change. Not sure when it really got better but I do remember the very best thing early out was chicken veggie soup that my sister made and pureed. She froze a whole pot of it in icecube trays so I could heat up a couple of cubes at a time. Yummmm
Just because protein is "unflavored" doesn't mean it has no flavor. It just isn't chocolate, vanilla, etc. There are some things it adds to easier than others. You may need a different unflavored. We were told that syntrax was one of the least tasting of the unflavored proteins.
I also did lots better with warm than cold. Unjury chicken soup was a mainstay for quite a while. Protein decaf coffee, protein herb tea, cream soups allow you to get your protein in as well as your fluid.
My Dr group warned us about hormonal swings. They suggested everyone go on an antidepressant before surgery. I had never taken anything like that but followed their advice and I didn't have huge mood swings that I see with other. Like Jody said, hormones are stored in fat and as you lose it you release them and they play havock with your life. I did go through hot and cold flashes which I think are part of the same thing (hysterectomy many years ago).
All of this really does get better. Your taste normalize and mood swings aren't as bad. Meanwhile, you are losing and losing and changing into the person of your future. Welcome to the lightweights and stick around and we will love and support you.

Thank you Price for your suggestions. I am already at that phase where I want to try everything but I think it is still too soon. I am in Ontario, Canada and haven't been able to find the Unjury chicken soup locally. I am going to my first support group meeting tonight I hope and will ask lots of questions. It's so nice to be able to chat with people that really understand what I'm going through. I was on an anti-depressant before surgery and am continuing with it. These crying episodes remind me a lot of what I was like prior to treating my depression. I am glad to hear that is will pass eventually. I am an emotional person in the first place so this shouldn't surprise me. LOL
Hi, I love Unjury and use it daily. I can't find it in a store, you have to order it online. Here is the website. http://www.unjury.com/ I have made shakes for so many people at work and in my family and they use it for weight loss without the surgery. I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems but hold on, it will get better. Also, you are in the right place. I received so much support from this site when I was going through some major times in my surgery. I am 4 years post op now and I still refer to this site for guideance. Good luck.
Don't get discouraged. You will be fine and when you see those lbs. dropping off, you really be fine. My surgeon suggested things like refried beans with a little cheese, mashed potatoes, soups and Egg Drop Soup. Well, I got some Egg Drop Soup, took one sip and it was just awful. I'm 6 1/2 years out and just recently I've been able to eat eggs. Never bothered me if they were an ingredient in a baked dish, but couldn't stand the taste. So weird how our tastes change. Microwaved chicken is just not edible. I can eat ground beef reheated in the microwave.
Unjury has the soups a lot of people use.
Hope you find something you like very soon. Take care.

Thanks JB. I am already at a stall. I'm pretty disappointed because I have only lost about 20 lbs. since I started the pre-op diet. And of those pounds, 10 of them were on the pre-op diet. I agree that microwave chicken is a no way, not eating that, food. I am looking forward to eggs. Chris
