I had my surgery on the 25th.So I am only a few days post op. I feel horrible. I have never been so nauseous in my life. As of yesterday I was okayed to start protein shakes.. I can't even hardly keep any water down, let alone protein shakes. I think I consumed maybe 2 tbsp of protein all day yesterday. Any I have been sipping on the same 8 oz of water since Thursday night. I am so terrified of throwing up. I am taking super small sips because of this. My dr told me that they gave me so much IV fluids that I have a few days until I would dehydrate but I am still nervous.

Pain wise I am doing okay. I think I have only took two or three pain pills since being home. My nurse yesterday told me that I would feel extra nauseated until the JP drain comes out. I will get it removed Thursday, which seems forever away. That is also really the only place I feel pain the most. Other than that I feel like I have done a thousand crunches.

Anyways- how often do I need to be taking sips to get in 4 cups?I was told 4 cups a day at first.  Would every 20 min be enough? I know my surgeon said my liver looked really good so he was able to give me a really tight sleeve. If I didn't feel so nauseous I think i would be okay. Throwing up hurts and I am doing it even when I have nothing in my stomach.

Also this is my first time having stitches that don't dissolve on their own. How painful is that going to be? I know the jp drain is going to hurt coming out too and I am terrified of that! Still have some trapped gas but I feel it mostly in my lower back. Sorry this is so long. I just need advice from people that have experienced it. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Oh, so sorry you are feeling bad.  You had major surgery and yes, you will feel like you have been run over by a semi for a few days.  The Dr should be able to give you something for nausea.  Throwing up is not normal and  you don't need to be worrying about that.  Call the Dr and ask for nausea meds.

We were told to do 1 ounce every 15 minutes.  To do that, you have to be basically sipping all the time you are not walking or sleeping.  Your job right now is to get tha****er in and then start getting your protein in.  Set a timer if you have to but this is critical so you need to be serious about it.

Don't worry about the drain.  It is so quick that before you know it, it is over.  You can take a pain pill before you go (as long as you aren't driving) if you are really worried but it really isn't a big deal.  Same with stitches.  No biggie.  Your gas pain is probably worse than either of those are going to be.

Believe me, in a few days, you will feel much better and be on the road to a new and healthy you!!!

I'm sorry you're feeling crappy!  All I can tell you is from my experience sucking on ice chips constantly helped me feel satiated as well hydrated.  Walking, walking and walking is what I did to get the trapped gas out and the pain gone.  I don't know what a JP drain is :( sorry if it's painful.  I had dissolvable stitches so again I didn't have that challenge.  I only vomited once after surgery and that was the night of my surgery and they told me that was normal.  Five weeks out and I'm feeling really good!  I've been getting into the swing of how to eat/drink and exercise and posting on this forum has helped to keep me focused.

FYI, I was on clear fluids for a full week after surgery and I believe even though it was a little difficult it helped me heal.  I also felt seriously overwhelmed more than once during the first week!  Since than everyday has become easier.  I also heard a great suggestion on the forum to use an ounce or two glass and drink that of water every 15 minutes.

Wishing you all the best in your journey! :)

Sorry your not doing well, once you make the turn for the good it gets better fast!

Yep agree with all of the above...jp drain not too bad...hold your breath and although it didn't feel good its over w/in a few sec.  Dissolvable stiches are great for just that reason, they dissolve and you don't even feel them go.  I also used the idea of the small shot glass 1/2 full or a medicine cup filled with water.  It made it so I didn't have to feel guilty about the small sips because I knew I was getting the exact amt I was supposed too.  Although I did keep the big cup to refill & little cup sitting next to me wherever I went.

Also my surgeon told me at first at least, focus on getting fluids in, protein will come.  Although I gotta say the warm unjury protein Ckn broth felt so good going down I lived on it for that first week.

Thank you all for your replies. I ended up going to the ER last night because I was severely dehydrated. After two IVs, phenergan and morphine, I feel tons better. I am doing my best to sip constantly. My doctor did give me Relgan for nausea but the NP at the ER said it must have not been enough to combat mine. So she also gave me a prescription for Phenergan. I have to say, last night was the best sleep I have gotten since surgery. So I think the dehydration had a lot to do with it. I am still a little nauseated but do not want to get to where I was last night.

Thank you all for your tips and I think I will end up setting a times just in case. I am hoping that every day gets a little better.

My doc gave me Zofran sublingal tabs for nausea and they work fast and really helped post op, I'm 3+ months out now and have had a few more times that I've needed the med for nausea, check with your Doc. Nothing worse than nausea

I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling bad. Hold on and take the advise of everyone before me. It really works. The only thing that I will add is that I was given medicine cups at the hospital and I concentrated on finishing 1 cup every 15 minutes. It was hard at first but I eventually was able to do it. Also, I had several protein drinks that were non dairy to try when they released me and those helped me get my energy level to the point that I felt like walking. I also walked for 1 to 5 minutes after I finished my medicine cup of medicine the first couple days. Keep your head up and stay focused. It gets better.

Maybe sf Popsicles? I haven't tried them yet bc I'm cold. I'm having the most success with warm/hot decaf tea and decaf coffee. I spent the first few days drinking plain cold water and barely getting in the minimum; the warmness helps a lot. I was also having trouble bc Ive been swallowing too much air and for some reason I swallow less air with the coffee.

I tried sf popsicle the other day but haven't since then. I may need to give it a try again. Right now I am eating sf jello made with isopure unflavored protein. Hopefully this helps me too!
