Constipation issues

I will keep this as gentle and clean as possible.  So yesterday was 8 days out of surgery and no bm.  We'll yesterday was the day.  I thought I had to go but nothing came out just a huge pain.   Terrible pain and minimum bm.  So I called the doctor she said magnesium citrate oral solution.  The same stuff I used night before the surgery.  So after much much pain.   7.5 hours finally was cleared.   My fear is now how to keep this from happening again.  Do I think this stuff again in 3 days just to make sure I never have that pain again.  I do see the doctor next Tuesdays.  But will not wait for the pain to come again.

Thanks for any advice.

I know exactly what you are going thru. I'm 6 1/2 years out and it's no longer a problem, but for the first couple of years it was.  I use Miralax occasionally.  I mix it in my shakes.  I use a fiber powder daily in my shakes or water or iced tea.  This would like Metamucil.  I use Costco's brand.  It says 1 teaspoon but I use 3 teaspoons at a time.  I also use Fiber Gummies.  Instructions say 2/day but I take 4-6.  They are sugar free but have 5 calories, 5 carbs but 5 g fiber so the fiber cancels out the carbs for net carbs of zero.

Not uncommon at all.  I was on a fiber product before surgery so I knew I would be on one after.  I do benefiber daily, like a double dose.  That keeps everything going now but miralax was what I had to use, 2x a day in the beginning.  Some folks use a stool softner also but that never did much for me so I cut that out because it was just one (or many) more pills.  both miralax and benefiber (I use the generic) are tasteless and you can add them to anything and will never know.  I have heard that metamuscal type products can cause gas so try the others first.

What you experienced is not uncommon.  I needed fiber before surgery so I was sure I would after.  Miralax worked for me well after surgery using it 2x a day.  These days I can do a big dose of generic benefiber each day and they keeps things flowing. they are tasteless and you can't tell they are in your drink at all.  I do mine in my morning decaf so it is done each day. I have heard that the psyllium products can cause gas so be careful with those.  Some folks find stool softeners work well but they never seemed to help me.

I feel for you!!  I do remember that being pretty bad.  I am lactose intolerant so even a small amount of milk always helped me go.  Just keep trying something until you find something that works for you.

Now at 6+ years I eat plain popcorn every night and I don't seem to have a problem.

I hope that you are able to figure out what works best for you! In my case, the protein shakes help me. Pre-surgery when I was just on protein drinks, I had the other extreme. Now that I am healed and eat solid food, the addition of 1-2 protein drinks seems to keep me regular. When I don't drink 1 daily, I am constipated. Good luck!
