I am having a terrible time with meeting my h20 and protein goals. Yesterday I was sooo determined and had a cup in my hand the whole day! I still only got 48 oz and 50 grams protein . I am supposed to be on puree now but can't move forward till I meet my water goal. I feel I  being diligent but I get nauseous if I  drink too much too fast. I had surgery 10 days ago and am still so tired and weak. Did anyone else have this problem? How does it get better? When does it get better? What can I do to fix it? :(

I had a very hard time... It wasn't until about 6 weeks out that I got both my water and my protein in on the same day.  If I got all my water, I didn't get my protein.  If I got my protein I didn't get my water.  All you can do is keep trying.  Try crystal light or room temperature water (if you aren't already) that early I found it hard to drink cold water.  Now I can drink about 3 swallows at a time (I'm about 3 1/2 months out).  I get my protein in, but I still have to really try to get all my water in everyday.

set small goals.  If you can drink 4 oz an hour, you can get it in.  Your protein counts towards your fluid.  So 1 oz every 15 minutes.  Set your watch to alarm, sip, sip, sip.

It does get better.  If you get nauseous, call your Dr and let them know.  We all left the hospital with meds for that but also with the idea that bad nausea isn't normal and you need to let them know.  It just takes more time for some than others.

I did much better with warm than cold.  Decaf or herbal teas were my friend.  Decaf coffee creamed with protein was great.  Chicken broth with unflavored protein.

You can do this!!!!  It really will get better.

Id offer advice but am in a similar boat.  Also had surgery on that day (RNY), I usually meet my protein goals w/3 8oz meals (shake or broth) drank over an hr each with the 25Gr protein each.  The Surgeon requires 70 Gr protein a day.  But honestly my fluid levels which are supposed to be 64oz ...that I'm closer to 40oz.

The one out I have is they said in the beginning you're learning how to accomplish your goals, so although they'll want to see it soon they have been ok so far.

Do you mean your surgeon wouldn't let you move on to pureed stage until you were successful at the others?  Yike hope not my first physical post op apt is tomorrow (first got canx'd due to snow and was a phone consult instead).  I  was looking forward to a scrambled egg

Oh thank you thank you for your reply!!! I am at 40 oz 2 days in a row. I am afraid I am getting myself too full.

As for the doc, it wasn't a punishment it was more of an idea to help me get more liquids in. Right now the struggle is having the time (30 min before and 30 min after wo water) and space for food.

I am still feeling tired and low on energy wondering if I add food If it will help with it. also wondering if my liquids are all protein liquids if they would be easier to get down as well.

3rd try.  My computer keeps timing me out.

While your meals are liquid protein, don't worry so much about the not drinking before and after eating.  Drinking is more important.  Do use that when you are eating food but not now.

did they do labs before surgery?  Where was your D3?  I really think my energy came up when my D3 came up.  It took 50,000 units a day for a month or so but I think they both happened at the same time.  Are you taking B12 sublingual?  Iron?

But the main thing is that you just had major surgery and you need rest.  walk rest sip, repeat.  You will get there.

Just to let you know my experience with Scrambled Eggs (and I'm not the only one). I don't want to ruin your fun but eat them really slow and take really small bites.  I ate them practically every day during my 6 months of preparing for surgery.  I also was excited to have some as soon as I was allowed.  I know this is hard to believe because eggs are soft but they got stuck for me every single time and I was miserable.  The one time they were stuck for 2 days.  I finally had to make myself throw up and I couldn't believe they were still in there and hadn't dissolved or went down.

I have scrambled eggs all of the time now but I've found that eggbeater whites go down easier than real eggs.

Early out I struggled with swallowing.  I've never been a big drinker but I actually craved having a big gulp of water.  I thought I would never be able to drink again. I know there is a no straw rule but my Surgeon told me to use one unless it hurt or caused me gas.

If you are using Protein drinks then you count that as liquids.  If you are trying to get you protein through food maybe you are eating to close before/after your meals.

If you put your protein in your drinks than you are killing 2 birds with one stone. I could pretty much only drink warm things. I put Chocolate or Unflavored in my SF hot chocolate, Unflavored in Crystal Lite...etc.
