I previously was pretty lucky in that my periods were 2 days with maybe some spotting on the third but that was it.  My surgeon wanted and I agreed to look at Birth Control methods before I went through with the WLS.  That and I'm now 45 and have decided my child bearing days are over.  We opted for Mirena because it was non-surgical and honestly I was looking forward to the side effect of no more periods.  So it was done 3 weeks prior to the WLS. Extraordinarily painful procedure, (doc said it was because I'd never had a vaginal birth, my son was a C-section due to complications and advanced age pregnancy). Two days prior to surgery I started to spot(when my normal cycle would have happened), but my PC Doc said that might happen.

But 10 days later (6 days after RNY) and it hasn't stopped, in fact its pretty significant amounts and consistently fresh red blood.  Not dark and clotted like a normal period.

So my questions are two:  Has anyone had any extended periods after having the mirena put in as your body adjusts to it?

Has anyone has vaginal bleeding as a result of WLS? How long did it last?

I have an f/up apt with the surgeon tues morn, so it definetly on my list of things to address, but its always nice to go in with background knowledge.

Thanks for any insight you can give.

Hi there, congrats on your surgery!  I previously had 2 Mirenas and a copper T iud. You should be able to find some info on this, but you can expect some spotting after placement of the IUD.  My first Mirena I don't think I stopped bleeding for about 4 months. The doctor even put me on a low progesterone pill to help, but it didn't.  After about 4 months I had a really heavy period then I didn't have any more bleeding for the rest of the time I was on the Mirena.  4.5 years then a 2nd Mirena for about 2 years.  I think it is common to have spotting for at least the first 6 months, but the amount of "spotting" is different for everyone. For me it was just constant bleh. Hang in there the no more periods will come, you just need to give it some time  if you can.

Good info, I wasn't really freaked out because I was sorta thinking along those lines.

It was just the timing and the thought that WLS might be the cause that I was more worried about.  And any bleeding from that, I'd expect to be urinary or fecal not vaginal (as that is , and I was just hoping for comfirmation of the bleeding as this is my first IUD.

Thanks!

I have had the mirena for 1.5 years. Have had maybe two- three quick periods. Then I had vsg on feb 10th. By feb 14, I have a full period (weird). But I did read that surgery can sometimes induce your period?! So who knows. But u can also check in with ur doctor about it if ur concerned.  :)

My daughter had the Mirena put in and bled for months (like 5-6).  She got so sick of it she had it removed.

I'm not sure why surgery would induce your period, but it did for me.  Morning of surgery I started.  They acted like it was no big thing.  I was worried they wouldn't do the surgery - but it appears its normal.  Now what's also weird is I've had a LOT of surgeries in my lifetime and WLS was the ONLY time my period started (off schedule) with a surgery.  Oh well...

So I talked with the Surgeon today, they canx'd my appt due to a foot of snow.  But they told me because of the hormone chgs caused by surgery, many people had extended periods after because your body was attempting to regulate itself.

So all were right no cause to worry, :-)
