i had GERD before surgery with a BMI of 37.4.  I was down to taking one Prevacid OTC at time of surgery and was fine. Now post surgery 9 days later I have horrible heartburn almost all day and have tried Prevacid, tums and even my daughters prescription heartburn meds and nothing is working?  Any ideas for me?

Even at 4 yrs, I still take Prevacid.  If I don't, I get heartburn which feels like a fire in my chest.  I would talk to the Dr.  There may be something else you can take.  When do you go back for your first checkup?  Until then or until you can talk to the Dr, do all the stuff you know from before.  Don't eat right before bed, Stay upright.  Sleep with a wedge.  Drink lots of fluid (one sip at a time)  You may find that some foods are better than others.  Are you on pureed or soft?  Wish I had a magic cure but I don't.

Which surgery did you have?  Most surgeons have patients on a proton-pump inhibitor for at least 3 months post surgery to help prevent ulcers.

If you had a sleeve you may continue to have GERD even long term.  That is one of the side effects of the sleeve.

I had horrible GERD and when I had a sleeve it was really bad.  I woke up choking on acid.  I told several Prilosecs a day with no help.

Since my revision to a RNY pouch my GERD is completely gone.  I haven't needed a proton-pump inhibitor since those first 3 months.

Did your surgeon put you on anything like Prilosec?  Most do for at least 3 to 6 months to prevent ulcers.  I was on mine for 3 months and I haven't had to take a single one since and I was taking at least 2 a day for years before that.

The RNY is the best WLS for helping GERD or even curing it in some cases.  Talk to your surgeon about getting a prescription for Prilosec or something like it.

At 6 years out I still take my Prilosec.  It doesn't feel like heart burn any more but if I skip it I get a terrible rumbling in my pouch and hunger pangs.

Thank you for all the great replies.  Back on Prilosec and so far so good.  My surgery was on December 17th so I think I'm might have been rushing things.  Back on track now!  Happy New Year to all....
