1.  I had RNY and my doctor didn't put me on a pre-surgery diet.  Just told me to eat low carb and I had to do the "clean out" the night before.

2.  Skype or if you have an iPhone or iPad Facetime.  I was older when I had mine and my kids didn't live at home, so it wasn't that bad.  I also traveled for mine and my husband went with me.  Luckily where I had my surgery I had several friends I stayed with so that was helpful too.

3.  I think it was a week after I was driving (I'm 6 years out now too).  I had a few rough nights and had problems getting up  out of bed (stomach muscles not cooperating), etc.  You will need to use your arms.  Also, for your ride home from the hospital (or hotel or wherever you're staying) take a pillow and put inbetween the seat belt and you.  That will cushion you from jolts, etc.  Also helps to hold onto it when you are going over rough roads or potholes.

Also - not sure what your nutritionist and Dr are saying, but you need protein drinks.  Have they told you the vitamin regimine you will be on?  Stock up on that before hand but if you didn't know, your taste buds WILL change after surgery.  Don't buy too much protein (flavored) as you may not like it post -WLS surgery.  I did well with chocolate and vanilla but couldn't tolerate the fruity, stronger flavors for quite awhile.  I now love some of them but it took over a year or so before I did.

Be prepared for your post surgery foods - most likely initially you will be on a liquid diet.  You should get the allowable foods from your NUT (nutritionist) or Dr.  Be sure you have them available so you're not needing to take a run to the store afterwards.

Like was said earlier, start getting used to NOT drinking with your meals, taking smaller bites, eating MUCH slower...

Welcome to the LW board and best of luck with your appointments and surgery!  We will be here for you to answer any questions before/after and love to watch new folks on their journeys.

Welcome to the LW Board.

1.  I had to do 2 weeks of liquids(protein shakes - we could do these with milk and add fruit) plus 1 low carb meal.  It was to shrink the liver for surgery.  Each surgeon is different though.  Some don't require anything like that and people have done fine.

2.  You will probably be feeling good the next day.  I was up walking later in the day after my surgery.  I had RNY.  My surgeon was 4 hours away, but my parent's live there so I stayed with them.

3.  I didn't have the sleeve, but I would do everything the same and do exactly what my surgeon suggested.

Good luck and can't wait to follow your journey!!

Linda

Good morning!  This is my first time coming to the lightweight forum.

My highest weight many years ago was 250, I had rny 7/22/14 weighing 231 / BMI 37.7.  My doctor only had me do clear liquids for 48 hours prior to surgery.  The nurse said the insurance (Medicare) wouldn't cover if my weight went much lower.  Like others have said, all depends on the doctor.

After I came home after 2 nights in the hospital I was good.  I took 2 naps a day for the first couple of weeks, other than that I was up and doing things.  I only had the pain pump 1st day and removed at 11:30 next day, I took some Tylenol once and nothing else.

You should be fine to Skype with your son.

Good luck,

Nola
