Need help with protein shakes
So I'm just over ten weeks out and I'm finding it hard to get my protein in. I don't tolerate meat well and have tried many many protein shakes. Even unjury and others that are made for post surgical patients leave me vomitting and dumping for hours on end. It leaves me eating lots of cheese and milk to try and meet my goal. Can anyone suggest other options?
I'm so sorry. I think Roz said she had trouble in her first year too. It's not unheard of. I would give it a break and try again in a month or so. You might try to mix them a little thinner. If you're game, see if you can handle adding protein powder to pudding or yogurt. If you have the same reaction, perhaps you really are allergic to whey protein isolate or the sweeteners and will need to switch to an egg white base protein powder. I understand they can be salty, so be prepared, or mix them soup or something that won't be affected by the salt. Keep us posted.

this may not help you at all but thought I'd throw it out there. We just had a protein tasting at our support group on Thursday and one of the things that our NUTs both recommended for those that don't tolerate meat well to try Bocca Burgers and they make faux chicken patties. I have eaten them in the past and like the taste. The texture is different from meat so MAYBE it's worth a shot for you. Good Luck. Sorry you're having so much trouble

Unjury did not agree with me after surgery. The Syntrax flavors are good and can go in plain water or crystal light. If you go on their website you can order a sample pack pretty cheap. I diluted my shakes waaaaaay down after surgery, so you are getting a double bonus of protein and extra fluid'
Greek yogurt has tons of protein.

Gina has a good point so that is something to consider - whey isolate intolerance. I also have found that the Syntrax mixed in water (lots and lots of water) have worked the best for me. Maybe look at what Roz is doing these days with her Jay Rob protein and cottage cheese mixture? Hang in there - hopefully this too will pass.
You could have copied and pasted this directly from one of my old posts. I had the exact same problem. I spent a fortune on shakes, and even tried unjury. I was lucky to get 30 g per day in. Finally, by divine providence, my husband went to the store and tried yet one more brand. He picked up EAS advantEdge rich dark chocolate flavor. I knew immediately on the first taste I would be able to learn to tolerate if not like this brand. I am 4 1/2 years post op, and to this day it is the only brand and the only flavor I can tolerate. I do not like dark chocolate, but I think the rich dark chocolate in the shake masks the sugarfree taste and the protein case. I still drink them, even now. I had one this morning, and I will have another one in a little bit. To supplement my Protane in the early days before I found EAS, I found an unflavored protein that could tolerate high temperatures without becoming lumpy. It was perfect for high temp cooking. The only way I got my Protane and in the early days was I use a third of a scoop of that protein in a hot cup of chicken bullion. It was only 8 grams of protein, but I drank three or 4 cups per day. I could not tolerate meat either, and to this day i eat too very little meat. If you haven't tried the rich dark chocolate EAS advantEdge shake you might try it. It took a long time for me to even tolerate cottage cheese, eggs, and other types of proteins that would have been easy to eat if they had not nauseated me. I dictate with Siri, sometimes she doesn't understand me, so it's something looks weird I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. Good luck
"Even unjury and others that are made for post surgical patients"
Okay this drives me crazy. There is nothing special about Unjury (and others) that makes it more appropriate for bariatric or post-surgical patients compared to any other protein powder made of whey protein isolate. It's all marketing BS on their part when they say "specially made for" or "medical grade". There is no definition of "medical grade" when it comes to protein powder. Anyone can say that and it means nothing! End "marketing BS rant!" lol
Anyway...
If you dump / vomit on protein shakes, it could be a lactose intolerance issue. Make sure you mix them with water and not milk. And use whey protein isolate, not concentrate. Concentrate has more lactose than isolate. Also, try protein powders made of egg or soy and not whey.
OTOH, if the milk is going down fine but not the protein powder, then could it be the artificial sweeteners that a lot of them use to keep calories down? In that case, you can try to isolate which sweetener it is and only use shakes that don't have that kind of sweetener.
Another possibility is texture. That's something I'm sensitive to myself. I have to make my shakes in a blender with ice. I just can't take shakes made just by shaking the powder up. I taste every little aftertaste when they are made that way and I find myself gagging on them.
If it's just the shakes and not the powder, try putting the powder into foods and not a shake. Sprinkle it into yogurt or cottage cheese, etc.

I was going to suggest Greek Yogurt and maybe put a little(maybe 1/2 scoop) protein powder in it. I like the Fuzzy Navel in things like that. Like someone said you can order samples to see what you like and can tolerate.
I also ate a lot of egg salad in the beginning all blended up and with the juice from the pickles to make it thinner with a small amount of lite mayonnaise.
Good luck. Hope you can find something you can tolerate. Do you use regular milk? I use the Hood Calorie Count Down that is very low carb. Lots of people use the Almond milk so you don't get as many carbs as regular/1% or fat free milk.
