Is it just me or...
does it seems like most people talk about the negatives of the RNY or the sleeve? Hard to find long term say 5 years out RNY's or Sleeve's experience at where they are now. I value everyone's experience and have learned a lot but sometimes I just feel overwhelmed I guess. I keep going back and forth. They BOTH seems to have pros and cons. I know 6 people who have had the RNY and wouldn't change it and once sleeve who just have it a few months ago. All are doing well. The 6 rny's have been maintaining. They are 10years to 4 years out. The sleeve'r is losing well. They have all had no complications. I hope I'm just as successful as they are. I'm putting my trust in God that he will see me through with no complications and with great success :) Since my MD recommends the RNY over the sleeve because of my GERD I will take his advice. The last thing I need to develop esophageal issues or cancer because of the reflux. Not a guarantee that meds with work either. With the sleeve something I just discovered is that the Ghrelin that is removed has other benefits that are worth keeping it. It's just not a hunger hormone. Pros and cons to both
I am 3+ yrs out and loving my RNY. I do think it is easier to get to goal with DS or RNY than sleeve but it can be done with all 3. then the real work begins.
Welcome to the lightweights. We have lots of vets here of all surgeries (no bands that I know of but they may be lurking).

I am 5.5 years out from RNY. The folks that you may see saying negative things (in my opinion) may be the ones who think that weight loss surgery is a 'fix all' and they have had regain. There are others too that have had medical issues, and then there are those that have "regrets" - which means they regret having the surgery because they can't eat the foods or amount of foods they could prior. Unfortunately the surgery doesn't fix our heads, just our tummyes... Remember - it's just a tool to help you get the weight off and gives you the opportunity to learn how to eat correctly. After your malabsorption ends and your weight is off is when the "hard part" begins - which is maintenance and keeping it off. That's when all the things you learned during your weight loss phase come in. There are quite a few vets on this board with different surgeries that can help along the way.
My goal was 125, my lowest was 123, I am now about 135. Yes, I'd like to get 5 lbs off, but I am no failure by any means.
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery and welcome to the LW board!
ps - our beginning and goal stats are almost exactly the same.

I am only 7.5 months out from my RNY which I absolutely LOVE, but I was 7 years out from my first WLS- Lap Band-when I started the revision process so I have been on the negative side of this journey as well as the positive. I think there are far more positive experiences than negative for most post-ops regardless of their particular surgery. It is really up to you - if you are ready to make the changes you need to do and be compliant then you will most likely get to goal or close to it anyway. Whether or not you have "complications" depends on so many factors - some you can control and most you can't. You have to put it on the scales and measure the risks for yourself. It sounds like you have some good expamples of successful WLS patients in your life which is great! I let my surgeon guide my revision choice (which was incidentally his ORIGINAL surgery choice for me that I didn't follow) and I am so happy I did.
I hope that whatever decision you make you feel confident in your choice. Good luck on your fantastic adventure!
