Good afternoon, I am new to this website and so far it has been very helpful reading other's posts but I am trying to get to my goal weight so its time for me to get involved and start asking questions.  I had RNY 15 months ago and I am in a major stall...I have been visiting my nutritionist as scheduled but she isn't giving me any guidance at all.  She told me to stay below 1500 calories, 65g of fat and keep my protein above 80g but that's it.  She told me that there aren't any eating restrictions and she didn't give any guidelines regarding carbs.  After reading some posts on this forum, I believe I am being lead astray.  I have been at the same weight for the last three months, and I am beginning to figure out why.  How many carbs are acceptable for the day?

Welcome!

For some of us, for active losing, stay below 30 carbs.  Maintenance you can go up a bit, but adjust if needed for "regain". Stay away from simple carbs - complex carbs (veggies) are what you should be eating at this point.

I'm 5+ years out, so I don't remember what my calories, etc were at 15 months, but you definitely want to stay below 1500.  Fat isn't your enemy (to some of us here), but it is if you mix it with carbs.

So basically, I follow a low-carb, Atkins type lifestyle ALL the time...

I think your protein is good... but remember, if you had RNY you may still be malabsorbing protein - so be sure to supplement with protein drinks and shoot for a little higher # (like 100).  I find when I drink my protein drinks, I lose.. when I quit.... I gain...  horrible cycle!!

Welcome!!

You may be coming into the end of the honeymoon period and beginning to start losing some of the malabsorption you had early out.  You will never stop malabsorbing vits and mins so you need to keep those up forever but you will begin to absorb carbs and fat again.  But I also really slowed down around 6 months.  Then I found that I could eat the same number of calories, around 1000 and still lose weight if I kept the carbs under 30 net.  I do keep my protein a good bit higher, 130-150g a day.  Like Jody, I don't really worry about fat but I don't eat fried food often or at all but healthy fats, I allow myself.  Also, as we lose weight, it takes fewer and fewer calories to stay at our weight, so the more we lose, the less we can eat, unless you are exercising a good bit.

Start posting on Miles and Menus and see what folks have to offer.  We want you to be successful!!!

I could not do 1500 calories or I would gain.  I'm tracking my food right now on MyFitnessPal and usually stay around 1200 and am not really losing, just staying about the same.  Today my carbs were 62 (Net 57), Fat 35 grams, protein 159 grams.  I don't worry about whether something is full fat or fat free.  I would rather eat a smaller amount of full fat than more fat free because of the taste.

If you are not tracking your food, try to measure and weigh your food for a while to be sure you are not getting "bites" in and not accounting for them.

Try posting your foods on Menus and Miles and let us see what you are eating.

Are you doing any exercise?

Good luck,

Linda

I am 5 1/2 years out with the RNY I still only take in about 1300 calories.  Any more than that and the scale moves up.

It sounds like you are in a stall.  Do you drink Good Whey Protein Drinks?  If you do increase them for 3 days and then drop back down to what you usually drink.

I do have to explain something to you before I go on. I have been recently diagnosed with IC (painful bladder symptom) so my menus are a little off right now so the following information is based off what worked for me in the losing stage and maintenance.

Before Maintenance
Under 1000 calories (with food and protein drinks)
Protein:  100+
I didn't count Carbs  BUT rarely ate "bad" carbs during the losing state (bread, pasta, rice, etc.)
Fruit was limited because of the carbs/sugar.

MaintenanceDaily Goal is 1300 and that includes at least 3 Protein Drinks (300 Calories) (Syntrax Nectare: 100 calories, 0 Carbs, 23g Protein)
I eat numerous small meals through out the day
Protein first and then maybe a bite or 2 of carbs  (I only count the Protein in my drinks so just with those I am over 100...food Protein is a bonus)
Still limit fruits because of carbs/sugar

Carbs
I don't limit (or count) good carbs like vegetables

I opened this thread because I've already had one previous not-helpful experience with my program's dietitian. It was during a previous weight loss attempt. I told her I wanted help with setting up meal plans using only natural foods. She kept pushing chemical laden buttery products and said high fructose corn syrup was considered natural. Not helpful!!  She also showed me the food plate. Ugggg, I know what I "should" eat I needed help in putting together a menu that I could prepare within my neurological limitations.

During the time between then and now my area got a new surgeon who did WLS and the dietitian I had a problem with is part of the team. Ugggg...  and I have to meet with her at least 4 times before they will schedule surgery. I certainly hope she'll be more helpful this time around. From what I've been reading, people's post-surgery eating has been mostly simple meals (which is what I need). Other things in my life have changed since that time and I've been better with speaking up for myself.

Thanks everyone for the advice...I decided to go with what I know and get back to the basics!  I started drinking protein shakes again and limiting myself to veggies as my only source of carbs and the weight is starting to go down again.  I think it was a mistake to come off the protein shakes so I am going to keep them as part of my routine.

Thanks for the help...I really appreciate it!

Stacey
