I originally wanted ds and am at a bmi of 32.9 would they continue the surgery I wanted originally? I have only lost about 5 lbs in the last six months. I've basically been in maintaince since 4 months out. I have the opportunity now to have the ds and I wanted to know if this is even possible. I posted in revision to see if its possible but they are so mean there some times so I wanted to post here. because it's so hard to stay in maintance I would have no problem staying this weight or gaining weight if need be for the surgery. I know this is against everything you guys believe in but I'm stuck, I'm finished, I'm lost and I can't take any more. I've been same weight give or take three or four pounds depending on the day for SIX months. I wanted the DS from the beginning. So what do you think... what were the requirements (BMI) to have DS surgery? Ok well I hpe I get some postitive responses. I'm really stressed and depressed about doing everything right and not loosing. I feel like this is my last hope. My blood pressure is still up and need medication, still have my sleep apnea pretty bad, I'm borederline diabetic, and my asthma is out of control. I need something that's going to work. Since I KNOW I can keep to plan I don't see why DS wouldn't work for me. Please give your opinions and be gentle. I'm emotional enough without being attacked.

I think they would want you to be at a minimum of 35 BMI with unresolved comorbidities, but I would check since you do still have comorbidities. I understand the practice that Dr Bonini (sp) is part of only will do the DS for 50BMI so you may have to travel to Dr Greenbaum in NJ or another good DS surgeon.

There is one that's about a 5 and a half hour drive from me. I would need a hotel for about three days after and one day before.  My car gets excellent gas mileage so I could have no problem getting out there for fairly cheap. It would only be about a tank of gas each way. That's only 45 bucks each way. My husband would be able to stay with me in the hospital and drive me home. All after care could be done by family doctor.

It depends on who is paying for it. If you pay for it, I don't see the problem. Lots of surgeons do this surgery on people with BMIs between 30 and 35 if they are self-pay.

If you want insurance to pay for it, well, who knows. They all have different requirements for revisions and most do their best not to pay for them unless you are dying and even then they balk.

Oh, and it's not against everything I believe. I believe that our bodies have a set point and we can control our weight within our set point by about 30 pounds only. It drives me crazy when people post about revisions and everyone jumps on them about how "if you don't have your head on straight, this surgery won't work either" without any regard for why the surgery didn't work in the first place. They even say to people whose lap bands are eating away at their stomachs. It's insane!

I think only you can know if you did everything you were suppose to or sabotaged yourself. We can't know that. (Okay, there are a few people on here who it's obvious they sabotaged themselves because they are too crazy to hide it. Haha. But most people, we have no way of knowing.) So ask yourself some honest questions and decide if you followed the plan to the best of your ability -- not to some super-human level that only a saint could maintain for life, but a normal person level of effort that you can live with for the rest of your life -- or if you didn't.

If you did, then probably there is something about your surgery that didn't give you good results. Like maybe your surgery didn't make your stomach small enough. Or your metabolism is really messed up. Or you have exercise restrictions that make it hard to burn the amount of calories you need to without also having malabsorption.

Though I don't think you should count on losing weight having a big impact on your asthma. It might but plenty of skinny people have asthma. But the other stuff -- sleep apnea and blood pressure -- should improve if you lose another 50 pounds or so.

My surgeon does low BMIs and he's an awesome 2 part DS surgeon - I had a very uneventful recovery.  I know another 2 parter *****cently got switched and she ended up having her surgery open, whereas both my ops were lap.

I highly recommend Dr Himpens in Belgium for a 2 part DS.  He does a 75cm CC.  His contact details are on DSfacts.com  I stayed in for 4 nights and I paid ~$17K and I have contact details for a great nearby B&B if you're interested, let me know.
