Juicing?

I know we aren't supposed to get A LOT of fruit and veggies but is it ok to make our own juice and supplement a drink or two or a meal or two with these drinks? I was given a juicer and I have always wanted to do this. I wanted to eat raw because I have done this before and I felt so much healthier but I'm concerned about not eating meat so I figured I'd ask about the juicing. Has anyone done this or are they doing it?

My thoughts on this are that juicing removes the fiber from the food.  So I will say veggies ok as they contain little sugar, but no to fruits.  Eat fruit whole.

ETA  I also think NO on replacing meals with juice.  You need protein not juice.

Not for me.  I need the fiber and to feel full from eating.  Juice wouldn't get it.  And you need protein.  I guess you could mix unflavored protein powder with the juice but I can't see me doing it..  Esp. not as a meal replacer.

I agree totally with the posts above. You would have to use more than a serving of fruit to get enough juice to make it worth the effort. That's a lot of sugar. Plus it would be a sure thing that my acid reflux would come back.  I believe in drinking my Protein but I want to enjoy every other food that goes into my mouth...especialy fruit.

I make a juice every morning

1 apple , 3 celery stalks, 8 kale leaves, half a cucumber, 1 lime, 1 inch piece of ginger.

is half the amount of Joe cross, mean green juice.

I was sleeved 10 weeks ago and I'm having trouble getting my calories to 500 a day, if I don't drink the morning juice I can't get any veggies into my diet.

my typical day looks like:

7 am - mean green juice

8 am- 1.5 ounces of protein

12 noon- 1.5 ounces of protein

4 pm- 1.5 ounces of protein

8 pm-1.5 ounces of protein

that's is what my whole day looks like, when I'm not eating or waiting for the 30 minutes before/after I'm drinking water but right now is all I can eat.

Joe Cross has a really good website but like the posters above said, mostly have fruits which make them too sugary for us so I stick with this one.

best of luck!

A naturopath once told me juicing is for a sick body that needs to heal. The nutrients are just absorbed, no work involved. If you aren't having a health crisis green smoothies are the way to go. Lots of vitamins and fiber

I have ms and once did a juice fast and it seriously helped me in a way no medication ever could have. I've also done green smoothies for years before having a VSG. I'm not sure now what would be appropriate. I would love to do some green smoothies but I'm afraid of the volume. I can't imagine how 16 ounces of a green smoothie would interrupt my protein consumption.

Having said all that I'm sure I will give green smoothies a try after I reach goal and my hair quits falling out :-)

I was going to ask my nutritionist about juicing. I use to juice prior to surgery, and I miss the refreshing feeling it gave me. But I believe it should not be in lieu of protein (meat).

BTW, I go to juicerecipes.com, and build my juice to find out how much sugar/carbs/calories & protein I would be intaking. I found that most fruits I would normally juice are well over the amount of grams we should be having.
