chewing and crunching

I am kind of a nerd and am reading this book "Gulp: Adventures along the alimentary canal."   It is a light hearted book about the digestive  system.  One of the sections is about chewing and satisfaction, or satiety as we WLSers say.  Anyway the point of that section is that we need to chew and crunch to be really satisfied with our food.  There have actually been scientific studies proving this point.  The actual sound of the crunching adds to our pleasure with eating.  It was found that satisfaction with mushy foods like yogurt, or drinks was much less than with foods that take a good bit of chewing.  The reason I mention this is that I have been feeling a little bored with my diet lately.  So today for one of my snacks  I ate a nice crunchy apple and it tasted wonderful.  Had some nuts in the afternoon.  I really tried to think about the "mouth feel" of what I was eating, even the sound of the crunching.  Goes back to what we were taught preop about mindful eating.  But it is actually scientifically based. Now i am in maintenance and my plan does allow a little more adventure in my food choices.  No wonder I crave salad!

Good post and insightful.  There's so many folks that ask about the "crunch".  Even early out I think you can eat an apple (mind the sugar) but chew it to oblivion.  I remember those days... It's amazing how long food can last in your mouth when you chew as you should!

I think one of the reasons I love celery is the crunch.  Nuked turkey pepperoni too.

I know: celery, carrots, apples, salad, popcorn( in measured amounts LOL) nuts (measured) popcorn.

How long do you nuke the pepperoni?

I put a paper towel over and under about 15 slices and nuke it for 1 min.

This is one reason when I get on a munchie kick, I eat a lot of baby carrots. I also think this is why adding granola and stuff like that to yogurt is so popular.
