Protein question
Hey I'm just wondering... How many grams of protein are you guys getting in a day? I tried figuring it out without drinking most of my calories in protein shakes I only get about 55-65 grams of protein. If I add one shake to that I get 85-95. Is that enough? I would like to try eating most of my protein instead of drinking it because my shakes are starting to wear on my tummy lately. They are making me sick. Not the taste of them just the shakes themselves. SO I want to know how much protein should I be getting? I get a minimum of 120 grams now just in shakes but ususally get about 150- 160 in protein with the shakes and a meal or two. So I know the more protein the better but is 85 grams of protein enough?
Oh also, I am loosing still. No more stalling for now, KNOCK ON WOOD> I lost about two pounds this week. I will post my official weigh in tomorrow morning which will be my 30 weeks since surgery. But as of today I have lost 1.8 lbs in the past week :D thank goodness for that. This is with me upping my calories. Speaking of calories. When you guys finally hit your goal weight, how many calories a day did you start taking in to stay in maintance?
Ok Just curious. I hope you guys are having a wonderful weekend. talk to you soon.
Stay happy stay healthy :D
good for you, still losing.
I usually get between 75-85 in protein drinks and about that much in food, so 130-150g a day usually. Each meal has mainly protein and then some low carb veggies.
The maintance calorie number is going to vary significantly from one to another of us depending on our weight and exercise. For me, short and in the 120s and exercising 5+ times a week, both cardio and strength, 1300 is about where I need to stay to not gain.

This is just what worked for me. I did give up the protein shakes pretty early, and aimed for 90 to 100 grams during weight loss. Along with that I ate vegetables and fruit, I very slowly added some carbs as time went on. This does not work for everyone, I don't think I am very carb sensitive, as I continue to lose even with higher carbs (good carbs only) Like I said it worked for me, but many others have had success with higher protein, lower carbs program.
I am officially in maintenance, but still losing on 1300 calories a day. I exercise 5 days a week I am 55 so I feel pretty lucky. I aim to get over 75 grams of protein daily now.
Do you like greek yogurt? it is packed with protein, when I was first transitioning down the shakes, I would eat it at least once a day. Cottage cheese, hardboiled eggs are good also for protein.
Sounds like you are doing well, keep up the good work!

I try to get at least 100 g a day. Ideal is 150 g but I rarely get that. 125-135 g is more like it. I usually have a protein shake n the AM on work days. That helps a lot.
Even with this much protein, I still have low serum protein levels. I bounce bewteen 6.1 and 6.3 and the range starts at 6.4

IMO - that depend on your blood protein levels, activity and what other foods you eat. AS VSG - you probably do not malabsorb proteins so getting 50-60 a day may be enough if you also eat enough other foods to make sure you get enough calories. The body will use the proteins as fuel if you do not provide enough of other foods.
I had RNY and I need to be on a very limited carb diet (severe RH) so I tend to eat more proteins and fats.
