I'm a VSG'er (July 29, 2013). I've had slowdowns but not any major stalls. I feel like I've done really well so far on the weight loss. I get a lot of exercise with swimming 2 x per week, water aerobics 3 x per week, and physical therapy (squat, lunges, ab work, etc.). I'm thinking the exercise has really helped me a lot. I don't lose as fast as others that started at a heavier weight but I like it that way. I was actually worried I'd lose too fast compared to people I know. I haven't and that's good with me. I'm sure I surpass my surgeons goal for me but not sure by how much. I'm still just over 3 1/2 months out but since I started seeing my surgeon in January I've lost 60.6 lbs, not bad considering 50.6 of that has been since my one week pre-op liquid diet. :D
I've started lurking on this board more now. I had VSG (and lapband removal) in October 2012. I've lost about 76lbs and my weight loss has slowed but that's my own fault. I'm letting the baddies sneak in again and it messes me up. When I stick to plan, track my food, and exercise, I lose but I've been battling the same five pounds for a few months now. I'm hoping to finally get to my goal by Xmas.
band to sleeve revision and loving life!
You do you, and I'll do me
I'm almost 10 weeks post-vsg and stalls have become part of my normal pattern. My body will go 5-7 days at the same weight then drop two pounds in two to four days. As a lightweight my loss is not as fast, since it is the deficit between what your body needs to maintain the weight and what you take in that creates weight loss. So if I take in 800 calories and need 1700 there really is no way to lose more than two pounds a week. Just put your faith in physics and measure your gains by things like being able to fit your old rings, tight jeans being a bit less tight, or keeping a stack of clothes by the door that are the 'too big' pile. That last one makes me feel great.
As many others will point out, you need to exercise as well. I am not doing well on that score right now. Going through a nasty bout of depression. But usually this is when I gain weight, so not gaining is in itself a victory. If you can work in even an extra ten or twenty minutes walking a day, great. When you go grocery shopping go down every aisle.
The weight loss with vsg is slower, but seems to be more steady. You can build in a normal healthy diet earlier and keep it up for a longer period. I know it is depressing to see the rapid weight loss on other surgeries, but many of those people are starting out with far greater amounts to lose and far more trouble getting in the essentials in the first six months.
