I am 13 months post op and I had a bout of the stomach flu last week. I am feeling better but I'm still having a hard time eating. I don't have any appetite at all and if I make myself eat, I get extremely nauseated afterwards. Even if it's just drinking a protein drink. I haven't eaten hardly anything since Tuesday and I've lost 5 pounds in just those few days. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There is an over the counter anti-nausea liquid available. I think it's called emetrol, that might help you keep some liquids down. I would work on staying hydrated, maybe chicken broth, powerade zero, an some isopure clear protein if you can find it (vitamin shoppe). That stuff is kind of expensive, but I would get a bottle and see how it goes. It does have a funky texture, kind of like liquid jello.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't even think about emetrol. Maybe that would help.

Part of the problem is dehydration which causes nausea which causes dehydration...circle effect. Do what you can to 1) stay hydrated and 2) get your nausea under control. Don't worry about food this week, JUST fluids.

I seem to be able to tolerate warm liquids much better than cold. So I'm going to try hot tea (decaffeinated) and hopefully I can get hydrated. My mom thinks I need to go in for IV fluids, but I don't think I'm at that point yet. Thanks for the advice, ladies, I really appreciate it.

Jennifer....I don't want to scare you but can die from dehydration.   PLEASE go to ER and get fluids if you can't get enough fluids in.    It's not worth something happening to you.    Praying you keep fluids down and being dehydrated can make you nauseated.

I have read of many of post ops getting this way after a bout of stomach flu.  Like the others said, focus on fluids for several days.  My surgeon made sure I had phenergan just in case and I would call if you are still experiencing nausea.  Hope this passes soon.

Hang in there.
