Survived back surgery and can't sleep!

I was his first surgery of the day and in my room before lunch. I'm taking pain meds as prescribed but it still hurts too much to make sleep easy.

This hospital is a good one....I requested a visit with the dietician. After explaining why I need low carb and extra fat, she was on board. Even suggested me getting the kids yogurt cause it is full fat unlike the adult versions. She's scheduled in at least 3 snacks a day. One today was peanut butter with apple slices. Bedtime snack was cheese and crackers (ate two). The cheese were good size slices.

Can't believe finding a dietician who is so accommodating!

I was even up on my feet for about 5 seconds...altho I am cath'ed it doesn't stop the gut from getting in the act so they had me on the potty. All I did was fart. But it helped. Last time I did back surgery, it was almost 48 hours before I made it to my feet.

Sounds like you are making great progress. Slow and steady. Is the plan for you to get up and walk the halls today?

I hope you write a glowing review and thank you to that dietitian and kitchen for being understanding and following though like champs. I bet they rarely get glowing reviews. I am so pleased about this it just makes me smile.

Not sure what the plan is today other than PT coming in to give me lessons and exercises.

I did finally sleep some after going for the liquid pain med. But gonna have to come off that today, second dose about an hour ago and I'm itching like crazy all over.

I'll do the thank you to the dietician/kitchen later today when not so foggy brained! Dh was pleased to hear it too.

Only thing I need to address about the snack options is the choice of RTD protein. They are using Boost which would have been 50% of my carb intake for the day! I ended up giving mine back to the nurse. He took it down to some elderly no****ching carb intake.

They gave me Benadryl twice yesterday and once last night to help me sleep. It did!

I was able to get Miralax. Hopefully between that and fat bombs, I'll get back to normal.

sounds like you are right on track and glad they are cooperating.  I took in RTD protein last time but decided it was nasty and didn't ever drink it.  I figured for 3 days, it wasn't going to kill me to have only what they offered.  But my gut isn't as altered as you DS folks.

Sending healing thoughts your way.

Will be thinking of you!  Get better, hope they can control your pain more.  You need your sleep when just out of surgery.    Happy for you about the dietician.
