Sunday Weigh In

Right now, Asheville (Buncombe County) is out of network for me but not in 2014 which is fast approaching. Most of my specialists are up in Asheville...having a pcp up that way wouldn't really bother me since the FEW around here are either not in network (either cause they do not accept BCBS Medicare OR they are in SC and can't), not accepting new patients or if they are, the next "new patient" appt is next Spring.

As long as it's muscle and not fat, the high 120's may not be as scary as it seems.

I'm going up also, 133 from 130. Ugh ,that's 3 pounds. I am weaning off prilosec and my tummy has been crazy. Makes me think I'm hungry. Anyway back to the treadmill 5 days a week and weighing, measuring everything. I don't want to gain weight but I don't want to be on ppi for life. It takes about 2 months to get back to normal I hear. Any way see what next week brings. Hope fully not higher.

I suspect coming off the prilosec is affecting you. I stay on one pretty much permanently. Good luck with the treadmill.

Why are you going off the prilosec?  If I am on a ppi for life, so what.  I am not on anything else.  It really makes a difference in how I feel.

Well the cost is one thing, and the other is they can cause some not so good long term effects. I also don't like that I may be dependent on them. If I can't control my eating with out them, then I guess I will continue with them. I do not have heart burn or indigestion, I just have a noisy belly sometimes and I also feel like I need to eat more. Are ppi critical to keeping weight off? I understand why in the beginning we have to take them to protect the stomach during healing, but why do we have to take them for life? I went from 40mg down to 20. I thought I'd do that for a couple months then gradually reduce till I'm off completely. Bad plan?

Not everyone has to be on them after the first year...but it all depends on how you feel.

Are you getting an OTC one or a prescription one? Most insurance companies prefer you take the OTC so they don't have to pay.

And there are worst things to be dependent on for life...a PPI isn't an issue for me, I just take a daily Prevacid (generic). Prilosec did nothing for me but I can tell when I skip my prevacid.

I am buying generic prilosec. There are other antacids safer than ppis, I just have to do some research. I think I will call my surgeons office and see if they can offer some advice or suggestions with out making me drive 300 miles and pay a doctor's visit. If it comes down to weight gain or ppi, I will get back on the ppi, that is a small price to pay.. I would rather just be "clean" . I ready don't know what's best. I'm just flying blind really. But I will not gain more weight.

Good idea to call your surgeon. Your pcp may also be of help.

Ideally - it would be best if you can get off them. Too many possible complications, including mal-digestion of proteins, vitamin and minerals absorption, and so on.
Also - stomach acid can kill more pathogens that you ingest - so less chance of getting food poisoning.
Last but not least - stomach acid allowed food to be property digested - and that may limit gas and other food related issues down the bowels...

I don't have a doctor, the only support I have is here. And to go back to the surgeon. I don't even want to call them, but I don't want to go up over a pill. So I will have to.
