I am starting at 227 and would LOVE to get down to 130. I would love to hear from some lightweights who had great success following the rules and getting to goal :)

I made it to the healthy range. You definitely need to low carb to experience the DS magic.

Lowish BMI? See Lightweights Board! Lightweight Creed For more on DS see www.DSfacts.com

Started at 208...made goal in 7 months...now dealing with a slight bit of bounceback.

Too bad you are unable to use Dr. Stewart as he died suddenly this past weekend. But he was the BEST DS surgeon in TX...Barker may be an excellent surgeon but he isn't a good DS surgeon.

IF you are sure about this make sure he draws a sketch of exactly what he plans on doing.

Really?? Ive been hearing this more and more about Barker and with the size of his practice, i thought he would be great at it.  I know he's only been doing it for about 4 years but I haven't heard any bad experiences about his work for DS patients. Really curious where people are finding this info!

Under his profile under Background, he doesn't list a single DS...it's More information coming soon.

Also he has been cited for medical malpractice several times: http://www.scribd.com/doc/81714820/Wade-BArker-Texas

I'd ask about Barker on the VSG board. There have been a few things said there that make me nervous about him. But since I'm a post-op and not from Texas, I didn't take strong note of them since they don't impact me. But I'm sure his patients will repeat them if asked and you can judge for yourself.

I've never actually met any of his DS patients and could have sworn he didn't actually do them. Are you sure he's not a "bait and switch" DS surgeon. You know, the kind -- they SAY they do the DS but when you get their office, they have all these reasons why a DS isn't the right operation *for you* and the next thing you know, you're schedule for RnY or sleeve.

I'll be 6 years post-op next month and couldn't be happier with my DS and overall health. I feel I've been very lucky with the nutritional info I've learned here and from Vitalady. When Vitalady came through our area 3 years ago she spent time with Dr Elariny's dietitian, not that the dietitian wasn't listening to us, but she REALLY listened to Michelle.  Anyway, the dietician now makes sure the proper labs on run on her DS patients, we are free to move from Dr Elariny's 12 Vita4Life a day vitamin plan when it doesn't work for us and she recommends a plan much like Michelle's with tweaks as labs come in. We are free to use protein shakes and even encouraged to do so. They have modified their guidelines to meet what DSrs have found to work for them over the years...I like that. A good program will listen to patients' not preach at them and treat them like idiots.

So, with all that said, I got to normal BMI within 6 months and hit my personal goal in 11 months. I've regained a little (between 5 and 10 pounds) and need to control my carbs better and reduce my grazing. I knew I was a grazer when I had the DS and it is the only surgery that is difficult to out eat. My stats are in my siggy line--115 was my lowest and currently between 120 and 125.

So I'm curious as to what you are looking for. Because my general reaction to your question is: how could a lightweight NOT be a success with a DS--it's so powerful? mail Oh, I know there are people who are going to sabotage themselves. But they'll do that with any surgery.

Usually lightweights are worried they'll lose too much weight, not that they won't lose enough (with the DS in particular, but also sometimes with all the surgeries). So I figure you are asking something else. Yes?

Macmadame..... lol totally understand your question :) most people do come on here fearing they might lose too much weight with the DS as a light weight.  I have been REALLY trying to train my mind and work on the inside and my head to insure i am successful with this surgery... why you ask? i'm a carb addict :( and this will completely be a lifestyle change for me! i truly am looking for a support group that i can attend to keep my mind and motivation going.  I have two sweet babies who are 1 and 3 and an amazing husband that i would like to live a long good life for :) that help a little? ive read on here that carbs can completely ruin any success one can have with the DS so i CAN do this!!!!!

Yeah, carbs can undermine all the WLS, I think.

The DSers say they can absorb 100% of carbs and 50% of protein and 10 or 20% of fat (I can't remember which). What I find interesting is that for RnY they just say 20-30% of all calories as if they are all equal. I have to say, from what I've seen, I don't believe that. I suspect quite strongly that RnYers can absorb 100% of carbs too.

Disclaimer: this opinion is not backed up by science in anyway, shape or form. It's just a hunch. mail
