Hi.  My name is Vanessa. I am 31 years old with a BMI of 37.1.  I just scheduled my consult for WLS on July 15.  I have hashimotos, hypothyroidism, GERD, migraines... All of which started after my weight increased to a BMI of 30 within the past 5 years.

I am not sure which surgery I am interested in, but I am leaning towards the sleeve.

I am 5'7 and 237 pounds right now.  I would like to weigh around 175, but no less than 165.  Doesthat seem like a realistic goal with the sleeve?

Ay suggestions of what questions I should ask the dr at my first appointment?

Welcome Vanessa,  Just be sure your surgeon knows you have GERD.  I also had gerd and that made my surgeon recommend the RNY instead of the sleeve.  I wanted to have a sleeve to keep my valve intact but a sleeve can make GERD worse or can even cause gerd in those who dont have it already according to my surgeon.   A RNY takes the acid producing part of the stomach out of direct connection with your throat so no GERD.

Your weight goal seems reasonable to me.  I set my goal origionally at 150 and am below that already at 9+ months out.  So you never know where you may end up.  I also wanted to fit in a 12 and now I can wear an 8!!!  and still losing slowly.

Welcome.

All of the various surgeries are good and can get you to where you want to go (well, I don't recommend the band).  Look carefully at all of them and get your Dr's opinion on what will do you the most good in terms of your co-morbitities.  Also check your insurance.  I had surgery several years ago but mine would not cover the sleeve at that point.

Don't get too hung up on goals at this point.  Let your body decide where it wants to go.  It may be much lower than you think.  I thought I would be happy at 140, got at low as 111, stablized at 124.

Looking forward to hearing more about your journey.

Welcome to the lightweight board.

I had GERD...had the DS (which part of it is the sleeve) and it's been resolved. But I chose the DS for other reasons...1) I HAD to have NSAIDS, 2) Needed the malabsorption 3) was insulin pump type 2 diabetic.

I could not get the sleeve because at that time, Medicare did not cover the sleeve.

While GERD is contraindicated for the sleeve, MIGRAINES would trump that in my book...if you need the typical migraine meds, the RNY is not a good option.

Hi Liz,

I am confused, I have migraines too and none of my doctors changed my meds for them.  I still take fiorecet and imitrex as needed.  Should I not be taking these meds with RNY?  Just concerned after reading your post.

Thanks

Candy

Candy, it depends on which brand of Imitrex is used...some of the makers add an NSAID, some don't. Just be sure you are using a brand that does not include an NSAID. Ask your pharmacist to be sure.

Many tho treat migraines with NSAIDS which is why the precaution.

Liz
