Lower BMI Question

Hi All,

New member but been lurking for a bit. I am a "lightweight" scheduled to have my sleeve surgery on Aug 13th. Can anyone tell me if they have researched or experience that shows that lower BMI range (29-32) has a harder time dropping the weight after WLS? I am trying to make some goals and want to be realistic when it comes to my upcoming weight loss.

Thank you!

Welcome to the LWs.

I think you will find LWs aren't a lot different when you consider % of excess weight lost, not overall pounds.  Yes, we are not going to lose 40 lbs the first month but the % of excess weight lost will be about the same.  At least around here, most of us reach a healthy BMI at 1 yr to 16 months, some sooner, some later, but many of our heavier friends never do.

If you follow your plan, remember this is for the rest of your life, exercise and have realistic goals, there is no reason why you can't meet them.

Hi!
I started with a BMI of 37. With my two week pre op diet and 3.5 weeks after surgery I have lost 39.4 lbs. and now have a BMI of 31. It is different for everyone. Try setting small goals. Good luck!

Hi there,

I started my journey at 285lbs and a BMI of 46 (YIKES), day of surgery(12/06/12) I weighed 265lbs with a BMI of 42.  I am now at 185lbs and a BMI of 29.9.  I have found from reading on this site and especially the LW group, that it the percentages that count.  Make your goals realistic and talk to your surgeon about them.

Good luck on your journey, your life will never be the same again.

Hi,

Welcome to the lightweights, my highest weight was 255 I was about 234 at surgery on Dec 6th with a bmi of 37.8 today I am 152 with a bmi of 24.5. When I first started setting goals my first was to get below 200 and my second was to get to 150 which I thought to myself yea right if I ever hit it!!! It was hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that I wasnt going to lose 40 pounds and gain 50 back :) to many diets over the years I guess. Best of luck!!
