I asked my doctor if the sleeve is an option for people with gerd and she said yes but that contradicts everything I have read here and elsewhere. Does the roux en-y fix gerd? Cuz that would be lovely.

it fixed mine.....However......I still take prilosec.  I don't still have gerd but if I don't take an acid neturalizer for a couple of days, I get a burning in my stomach.  I've tried to go off them 2x, I am almost 3 yrs out and ever time I have the same issue.  Others feel hungrier if they aren't taking one.

Hope that helps.

This is my understanding.  But discuss further with your surgeon.  It depends on the cause of your gerd.  You can have a sleeve and if they (dr) fix hiatal hernia at the same time as your VSG it will improve GERD.  BUT VSG can contribute to GERD/reflux in people that did not have it pre op.  So there is a chance you could still have it or it may get worse.

I had reflux/Gerd/hiatal hernia and opted for the RNY, but it was my choice and my surgeons recommendation.  I wanted more than anything to not have the acid anymore. I was on PPI daily each am and Zantac 150 each evening to prevent asperation while sleeping. With RNY the acid producing part of the stomach is not directly attached to your throat: so no reflux and off both meds. :)

Thanks everyone. I think I've read ad nauseam about both procedures and so far, as of today, the roux en-y is in the lead due to the diabetes and gerd. Not sure if it cures fatty liver disease but that would be good too.

I had the RNY.  It took care of the Acid and burning right away but about a week or after surgery I noticed my stomach feeling a little nauseated so the Surgeon put me back on Prilosec. I don't take it every day  but if I skip to many days in a row I seem to be so hungry and my stomach rumbles so I take it for a week or so and then I stop and then start the process all over again....I can't figure out why I stop....LOL.

Thanks. I take Protonix in the morning and at night now so it would be good to get rid of at least one dose!
