Well it’s been a super stressful couple weeks.

Went to visit my Mom in Oregon and traveled by bus (7 hours up and 7 hours back).

At 84, my Mom is smoker (2 packs a day in the house), has macular degeneration, is a cancer survivor, pre-diabetic, her finances are in disarray and she lives alone. Her 81 year old brother lives nearby as does her 75 year old sister. Her house is loaded with bought bakery goods, potato chips and candy.  I’m an only child so all the care lands on me.

I spent the time stressed out and doing spreadsheets for her finances (she has a small side business) and making sure her banking was up to date. Not once did she comment on my weight loss and I was a little hurt.  Maybe I was expecting too much.  I ended up eating some potato chips (Lays plain) for which I felt guilty and so I had some more.

I did take Crystal lite and protein powder with me and bought almond milk up there to mix it in. I bought a rotisserie chicken, lowfat cottage cheese and greek yogurt which helped my diet.  I made some ground turkey spaghetti sauce which she actually liked instead of her high fat, sugar loaded recipe that I grew up on.  I did take my vitamins although I didn’t get any exercise.

Please don’t get me wrong, I love my mother and would do almost anything for her, but, she’s always been critical of my weight (and wasn’t overweight as a child/teenager and was extremely active with the horses) and demanding of me.  I’ve worked hard to overcome that baggage and just distance myself from her physically.

I’m scheduled to go back in October or November for a week and I’m stressed just thinking about it and wanting sweets and crunchy not good for you carbs.

I was so glad to get home to Sam (best, most supportive spouse ever), Diva (brown Toy Poodle, Cream, blind Toy Poodle) and the cats.

It was good to get back to work and a “normal” life oven though they brought in Baos, donuts and bagels to the office this morning.

Last night Sam and I went to my bariatric support group that is run by my surgeon and enjoyed a great evening learning more about nutrition.   Being around these open and positive people is great and helps to keep me on track.

Sorry to be such a downer, just had to vent.

Susan

I was overwhelmed just reading about your trip.  I guess it is wonderful that your mom can do what she is at her age with her issues but it doesn't make it easy for you.  sounds like you made the very best out of a difficult situation.  At this point, it is not likely she is going to change so you just have to figure out how to prepare yourself for the visits and do the best you can.

Sounds like you've got a full plate - but remember how you may have reacted PRIOR to surgery?  The WHOLE bag of chips instead of a few, not cooking healthy, etc?

You have done a great job under the stresses, demands and temptations that are in your way.

Vent away - that's what we're here for!

If you need to vent we are here!!!

I feel for you!!!!!

I'm struggling with my Mom too.  She will be 81 soon.  She only lives 7 minutes from me and even though my brother and sister live within the same distance and we try to work together  it is still overwhelming. She has Dementia but she remembers who we are, remembers most of the grandkids and recognizes our voice when we call but she  doesn't even realize she isn't eating, showering, or wearing the same clothes every day.  Her PCP says we can put her in a home but she probably won't live very long or her mind will completely go.

Sounds like you are back on track now!!

Hi Roz,

It is a good day so far.  I usually do ok at work, it is at night when I'm watching TV that I tend to stray...

I'm getting stressed right now, I can't figure out how to fix a problem I'm having with some accounts and it is about to drive me crazy - I probably need to get up and take a walk.

I hope you got everything balanced.  I'm a Problem solver and really miss doing accounting.  My Manager does the accounting part now so maybe someday when she retires I might be able to add that to my list of jobs.

Sounds Good!

HI Roz!

3rd day of decarb and not doing bad by it.  I didn't really go through a big carb detox because I usually stay away from.  I do have them on occasion, but honestly I didn't have an issue - which is good!  Not even missing my beer either!  Scale was down 2 lbs, but that's pretty much where I've been holding anyway.  I figured what I saw was water.. but still...

B - double protein coffee

L - spinach salad w/ a bunch of stuff on it.  Used honey mustard dressing - not much either.

D - leftovers - chicken?

Vits:  yep

water:  doing pretty good
