Can't Budge the Scale

I'm super frustrated!   I started this journey in 2007 weighing 285lbs.  At the time of my surgery (RnY) on 12/06/12 I weighed 265lbs.  On Sunday I weighed myself, 195lbs.  I've been at 195 for for 3 weeks now and although I've upped my protein and exercise, I still can't budge the scale.  I feel I should have lost more by this time.  I'm sticking to the plan, getting my fluids, vitamins and have a super supportive husband, but nothing is helping.  I'm proud of what I've accompllished so far but still feel I should be further along.  Any advice would be so helpful.

Susan, LOG every bite you eat and every thing you drink. I suspect you aren't 1) getting enough protein or 2) have carbs in there you aren't aware of.

Keep the log going for at least a week, maybe even two weeks.

Show your food log to your nutritionist or trainer or weight-loss buddy or us. It's hard to do, but when I did it, it was very helpful. Others helped me see things I couldn't. I wasn't a loser or intentionally doing things wrong, I just didn't see how my little choices each day tended to add up to something that stalled my weight loss. Granted I am close to goal, but it's the same story as you have.

Thank you so much for the advice, you guys are great.

I have been keeping (sort of anyway) a food log.  I will be more diligent about it now and start carrying it in my purse.  I have a hard time eating and had severe vomiting issues for the first 2 months after surgery and ended back in the hospital for a week because of it.   I drink between 64 and 85 ounces of water a day. My protein intake is at 90 - 100 gms of protein a day, both shakes and solid protein. I will be more conscious of carbs and where they might be sneaking in and even add a walk at lunch. 

I'm surrounded at work by failed bypass patients (4 in my office alone) and everyone brings in "treats" daily.  Luckily I dump at the slightest provocation so I keep pretty tight rein about what goes in my mouth but how I miss bagels and cupcakes.

I refuse to give in to defeat!

You have lost 70 pounds!  That is awesome and you should be proud of your accomplishment Just hang in there and keep following your plan and you will see the scale start moving again.  You are a month ahead of me and I have lost 50. Try to think of some of those wonderful nsv's you have had. Be thankful for that supportive husband, I have one also and i couldn't have done it without him.  Your body is just adjusting to your new weight and I know you will soon be heading lower.  But do talk to your nutritionist> having a second set of eyes look at your food diary may give some insight.

5 months was when I slowed way down.  I found if I ate the same number of calories, but kept the carbs under 30 net, I kept losing.  I still am very carb sensitive.  Remember that as a lightweight, you aren't going to lose the # of pounds that the heavy weights will.  You are still losing the % of excess weight you need to but the #s look a lot less.  in the last 7 months I was just losing a pound or 2 a week, but it kept coming off.  Add another protein shake, and a walk and just keep on keeping on.  It will happen, it just takes time.Really, in 5 months you have lost 70# and that is terrific.  Have you been taking your measurements?  Sometimes we change shape even when the scale isn't moving.  You can do this.  Hang in there.

Sometimes when our bodies need a rest we stall and that can last weeks.  I'd love for you to post on M&M every single bite you put in your mouth.  Sometimes being accountable and getting suggestions can make a major difference. 

Even good carbs like fruit can be the enemy so you might not even realize the problem is with your choices.
