Wow - a year already - I agree - time does fly!  I was wondering for myself if the screws could be removed in my foot later.  Dr never said anything about it and I don't think it's "normal" - but I was wondering... I'm inpatient when it comes to uncomfortableness and pain... I hope it's not too bothersome....

Are you sleeping better?

I am sleeping better but it still is uncomfortable unless I lay JUST right.

My surgeon did not mention them being removed til THIS visit...I think my complaints brought up the option. Had I not been complaining about it being bothersome, he would not have mentioned it.

He did say that in many cases he's had over the years, the screws have worked loose and in some cases the plate holding together broke in half...given that, I am much more willing to  go forward and have them removed when it's time.

Liz,

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.  I had complained to my doctor that I was waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air.  I slept with a machine for the diagnosis.  I would not wear the CPAP, It was one of the reasons I chose to have RNY 18 months ago.  I thought after losing weight I would get rid of the sleep apnea.  However, 3 weeks ago I had an extended TT.  In recovery I found myself gasping for air, the nurses rushed to my side and put me on oxygen.  For the next 24 hours every time I would nod off to sleep I would wake myself up gasping for air.  The nurses were very attentive.  They said it was probably due to the anesthesia.  I'm so bummed now because I'm thinking I still have sleep apnea.  I'm scared to talk to my doctor again about it because I don't want to wear the CPAP, as crazy as it seems.  I do wake up through the night a few times abruptly but never gasping for air.  I thought I was just having issues with sleeping UGH!  So how did you find out that you had a jaw issue? What were your symptoms?

I had a very frank discussion with my sleep doctor! Back in 2002, I had my first sleep study. As a result of that one, I had the UPPP done. Things hummed along nicely til after my DS. Since I had sleep apnea listed in my health history, they insisted on a follow up. That was where it was discovered that it was back, even after I had lost all my weight.

I had long thought that the UPPP was my only option. It wasn't but my first sleep doctor was a twit. I ended up using dh's after seeing him as a second opinion. He was the one who got me the referral to my jaw surgeon and things moved quickly from there. It was my jaw surgeon who discovered the reason for my lack of oxygen when he did the whole head panoramic X-ray.

I hope you get things resolved. Good sleep is important!
