Well , we lost a momma heifer and her calf. I feel so terrible and sad . A day I get off early and I decide to get my hair done instead of coming home to check heifers. After a long battle to try and save momma she bled out , then 8 hours later baby died in my arms. I love my cows they are like pets to me. My heart is broke. Thought if I shared I could sleep. Maybe I'm not tough enough to be a ranchers wife.

Thanks , Gina.

Im just still sick over it and I can't even like my hair, it reminds me of my selfishness , loss of two animals , and ignorance. I just need to think they are cattle , steaks , not pets. Learning I guess.

So sorry for your loss!! As a pet owner I know how much it hurts to lose one of your "babies". Hope you got some sleep.

I'm so sorry.  It could have happened if you got your hair done or not.  I have a friend who has lost half her lambs this year.  All born huge and dead.  Nothing she can do.  Sometime it happens and you can't do anything.  I know it hurts.  I don't raise a calf each year, although I certainly could, because I can't divorce myself from it to eat it.  I would worry more if it didn't concern you that if it does.  Worrying is what makes you better at being a rancher, not worse.

I'm sorry...but do NOT beat yourself up over getting your hair done.

Would you be putting yourself thru this if you had gone home straight and still had it happen? Or if it had happened while you were asleep? Things happen. It's part of life. Doesn't make it easy but it is how life works.

just hearing you're a ranchers wife makes you tough! i'm sad for you too, i love animals, steak making or not. But you know having been around farms, mother nature sometimes seems cruel. Now look in the mirror and remind yourself you are tough, you are beautiful and that hair looks GREAT!

I'm so sad about your loss.  I was raised on a small ranch and have love for all animals as well.  You're a strong woman to live the life you do.  I admire you.  It's okay to mourn the loss of your animals.  But there's a time to rejoice life too.  Today is a new day. You are a rancher's wife and a darn good one!  Look around at all that flourishes on your ranch and celebrate your good fortunes.
