all confused, new doctor??

I honestly don't know what to do. There are three places according to oh that offer the surgery I want near me, well within 50 miles. At my last weigh in I was told the 3.2 lb weight loss wasn't enough. The nurse told me I would have to loose an additional 17 lbs before he even scheduled surgery. The dietician said that he just wants to see consistent weight loss. Ok fine but does he want to see it consistent until I meet the 17 lb weight loss? IDK, so frustrated.

I have another hospital and surgeon that I'm going to check out on March 25th, (which is the day before my first surgery date) I have to go to the free seminar then the physician requires 3-6 months of supervised diet, even though my insurance doesn't require it. UGH Ok so NEXT

I found another surgeon/ hostpital that takes my insurance, does my surgery, and isn't requiring me to do the free seminar AGAIN. They will require a weight loss but I'm not sure how much or how long. I have sleep apnea, I have high cholesterol, I did have high blood pressure but that has almost stabled since I quit smoking, I have a small hiatal hernia. I am also a light weight and at the moment my bmi is 39.7 SOOOOO I'm teetering on the line of bmi requirements. My insurance WILL cover it with BMI of 35 with comorbities but my concern is that if I loose too much they will say NOPE.

My present surgeon, who has been nothing but trouble and heart ache has had the nutritionist call me today CLAIMING there is no particular weight loss that I need just consistent weight loss. I am supposed to be weighing in every two weeks. I don't see the last surgeon I found until April 9th.. the day before I was SUPPOSED to have my surgery. Figures right?

My dilema, I don't know if I should put on the extra 2 lbs before april 9th so I have a 40 bmi, orrrrr if I should continue to try loosing weight prior to my appointment in april and keep going to the bi monthly weigh ins for the present surgeon while I wait for the other surgeon? WHAT WOULD YOU DO????

OHHHHH and I do have a plan to loose weight quicker if I need to stick with present surgeon. I jog three days a week and don't really exercise the other days except for occasionally doing the xbox kinect. Soooo my plan is to fast on nothing bu****er on days that I don't jog and keep to 1200 calories on the days that I do jog or exercise. That will give me a huge calorie deficit and drop weight pretty quickly. So please don't be mean but I would love to hear your honest opinions.

Oh my goodness!  Dang!  I cannot believe what these guys are putting you through.  Did you tell the dietitian the hell they've been putting you through? What did she say?

If the current surgeon really only wants to see your determination and not some magical number he's dreamed up, I'd stick with him.

I agree with Gina. It sounds like you are overwhelmed with frustration. I'm sorry for that. Keep your chin up.

And, remember...changing your life is a marathon, not a quick fix. Persistence and patience pays off. Stay with it.

I got lost in all that.  I can't imagine what you are feeling.  With your co-morbidities, I think you are fine even if you drop before 40 BMI.  I wouldn't go below 1000 on the days you don't jog.  You don't want your body to go into starvation mode and stop burning calories.

I don't know which group I would go with.  I'm glad I had a center of excellence and they were decent and made sense.

IMO you will end up ahead if you stay with your current surgeon and try to drop a few pounds per appt.  Starting over may be tempting, but may take longer in the end.  Have you ever tried a low carb Atkins type plan?  Low calorie plans are hard to stick to pre op, I had to do a lower calorie plan for 6 months pre op, it stinks! Low carb works for some quick weight loss.

I tried atkins for a short while, i was afraid to stay on that it would further increase my cholesterol. I didn't loose any weight in the first week then only lost three pounds the second week. However, on the days that i'm going to eat that is exactly what i'm going to do... very low carb high protein. figure its a means to an end and will get me the surgery that will ultimately lower my cholesterol as well as improve my over all health. My present dietician wants me to do 40 g or less of carbs a day I'm trying to stay below 25 as per atkins induction phase.

If you are worried about your cholesterol, perhaps the South Beach Diet would be a better option.  Its low carb and high protein, but its low fat protein.  It was designed by a heart doctor.   Either that or just try to consume your proteins on Atkins from leaner choices, fish, chicken, low fat turkey meat, etc.

werte you aware that it is old school thinking that animal products raise cholesterol? it is not animal products,it is carbs that raise cholesterol.  My DH eats a tremendous amt of amimal products but is totally grain and carb free and his cholesterol has normalized and he has gone off statins. There is also a hereditary factor for high cho;lesterol...some ppl have it high no matter what they eat.

Now is not the time to worry about those things. they will sort themselves post op. right now you just need to get the surgery. I would call the office of the second surgeon or which ever one doesn't require a certain amount of  weight lost, tell them about the supervised diet you are ALREADY on,you have been on it a couple of months, right? I think there is a good chance that all of your tests, supervised diets, etc will transfer to a new surgeon.

I agree with Liz,I would be changing ASAP,even if it did mean a delay. There is no way in hell I would let one ********urgeon who thinks he is God,cause this kind of grief in my life. Just not going to happen. I  would deserve better than this treatment and so do you.

Sounds like your current place is giving you MIXED messages...

The nurse told me I would have to loose an additional 17 lbs before he even scheduled surgery. The dietician said that he just wants to see consistent weight loss. Ok fine but does he want to see it consistent until I meet the 17 lb weight loss?

If they disagree like that, who is actually IN CHARGE! I personally would leave them. No need to put yourself thru all that frustration. I would NOT want just a phone call but have it IN WRITING!!!

As far as the last option...the last one, sounds like a better option. To be honest, if you have comorbids, as long as you are above a 35 BMI, you qualify and sleep apnea is a BIGGIE!!!

Sometimes there are reasons a door closes for awhile but the window will open. Maybe March just was not meant to be your month for surgery. I was originally on track to have mine in Oct 2010 but due to needing to switch surgeons, I ended up in Jan 2011. Okay so I lost 4 months but I suspect Someone Else knew exactly when my surgery should be.
