Revision at 32 BMI???
Not all surgeons require 30 mins before and it seems like more are changing their mind on it. While my doctor recommends it initially it was stated in more than one group by the nurse that teaches it that she drinks prior to eating. I too drink up until about 5 mins before I eat. Not because I can't drink before it but I'm typically making the plates and too busy to drink up until the first bite of food. And yes we can't drink during our meals but growing up I wasn't allowed to either. The rule from my mom was to drink a glass of water prior to dinner and you didn't get anything until you ate your food, (I was underweight while growing up with her). So maybe it would serve others not just those with rny who knows? Either way it isn't "bad" to not be able to drink with your food.
As for the dumping only 30% of patients dump, and actually it's the reason I chose the RNY over the sleeve. I wanted to dump! I wanted to have that as an extra "safety belt" to keep me on track, I am one of the 70% unfortunately.
I also eat butter, bacon, and even a couple of fried wings and was told not to eat the low fat foods unless full fat bothered me, it doesn't.
And the post from Duke is what those surgeons recommend it isn't a study. I too have never seen a study on the drinking prior to eating and since nothing is there to hold in the water I won't stop 30 mins before unless I'm not thirsty.
btw if I was the OP and had a sleeve I too would look at the DS. However, studying all the choices is key.
I know many of us are very loyal to our choice of operation but the fact of the matter is they (WLS) can all be successful. We each need to look at our own choices, habits, addictions realistically and see what it is that would best suit us. We need to discuss with our doctors HONESTLY why and how we got where we are. We need to research til our eyes bleed (okay maybe not bleed but you know what I mean).
I know people that are successful with all of the surgeries (even the lapband eek! which I'd never recommend). I also know people who have failed their journey, I say they failed it because MOST (not all) didn't do the head work and relied on the operation. They resorted back to their old ways, they eat slider foods, they don't take their vitamins, they don't change their lifestyle. And I know some that the surgery failed them.
I am obviously still pretty new to the wls world personally and I pray that all the money my insurance paid to my therapist this past year will be worth it.
Information and education is key just as it is with most things in life.
I know some will call that fraud, and come down hard on me for it. At the time I felt totally cheated by the system and was desperate. I said 'I can't seem to stop yo yo ing, even when I lose weight it creeps back' and boom,
I got referred to the bariatric program that day.
(The ironic thing for me is that I've since decided to go the self-pay route, because my plan changed again and the deductible for the surgery cost skyrocketed... and I got sick of fighting the appeal process for VSG. But I learned so much in the year I was in the bariatric classes, I feel I will be much more successful in the long-term than if I had done it immediately.)
What a tough place to be in! Wish you the best.
Ha ha, nice trick!! I tried chugging water when I was getting sleeved, but it didn't work at all, as I had to keep going to the bathroom!! ;)
BTW you should come out of lurkdom.
